[10.1]: Cart of the logged users are not saved after updating to 10.1.0

Prerequisites

• I have carried out troubleshooting steps and I believe I have found a bug.
• I have searched for similar bugs in both open and closed issues and cannot find a duplicate.

Describe the bug

Products in the cart are not being saved when you log out.

Expected behavior

The product of the logged in users should save whenver activity they do unless the checkout or deleted the products.

Actual behavior

The logged in user's products in the cart are remove or not being saved when they close the browser.

Steps to reproduce

1. make sure you have 10.1.0
2. Login and add products to the cart.
3. Close the browser.
4. Open the browser and log in again
5. You will the the product in your cart is gone.

I have tested this many time on new updated browser

Isolating the problem

• I have deactivated other plugins and confirmed this bug occurs when only WooCommerce plugin is active.
• This bug happens with a default WordPress theme active, or Storefront.
  • I can reproduce this bug consistently using the steps above.

I'm unable to replicate this. I'm using the following steps:

1. Open incognito browser
2. Login
3. Add to cart
4. Close window
5. Open incognito browser
6. Login
7. See cart items are still present

10.1 changed how carts are stored between logins, using the session table in the database instead of user meta. I notice your system status report shows:

I wonder if this is being too aggressive and destroying the session early. Can you check by removing that plugin?

I’m experiencing the same issue: my website customers’ carts are disappearing. To reproduce it, what I do is log in to a customer’s account and add some products to the cart. Then, I log out, wait around 10 minutes, and when I log back in, the cart is completely empty.

What’s strange is that if I query the database directly with something like:

SELECT um.meta_value FROM wp_usermeta um JOIN wp_users u ON u.ID = um.user_id WHERE u.user_email = 'cliente@correo.com' AND um.meta_key LIKE '_woocommerce_persistent_cart_%';

…the cart data is shown in the database, but it doesn’t appear in the actual cart on the site.

@racmanuel No there is not. Since carts are still temporary data we didn't migrate it to sessions. But that won't solve your issue; I suspect you're using something to clear customer session data, perhaps as some kind of optimisation you've implemented or an extension?

I don’t have any plugin active that clears customer session data. I’m attaching my Site Health report for reference. At the moment, I’m on version 10.0.0 since I rolled back after I noticed the problem.

@racmanuel, since this appears specific to your environment, you will need to test for plugin/theme conflicts. Unless you've reviewed the code of all the plugins/custom code active on your site, I think it's premature to say you don't have any plugin active that clears customer session data. Looking over your list of plugins, there are at least two that have Cart abandonment as a feature (Groundhogg and WooCommerce Cart Abandonment Recovery), which might involve manipulation and/or interaction with cart session.

Most of the logged-in customers are used to having their products stay in their cart for a long time. After updating from 10.0.4 to 10.1 the issue starts.

@jiggsx If it’s not that, it’s something else. You’re looking for an extension that either clears sessions, alters their duration, or modifies the wc_session_expiration filter.

Just to clarify: users with saved carts from before 10.1 will not have a saved cart after upgrading to 10.1. So if you’re testing this after removing an extension, please follow my testing steps to confirm:

1. Open a private browser window
2. Log in to the store
3. Add an item to the cart
4. Close the private window and open a new one, or use a different browser
5. Log in again
6. Check the cart for the item(s)

The way saved carts are stored has changed.

Before 10.1:
Carts were saved to the database as user meta under woocommerce_persistent_cart. This duplicated the cart session and was updated on every request. It caused performance issues because WooCommerce had to constantly read and write to user meta when loading or updating the cart.

After 10.1:
Instead of duplicating data into user meta, the existing session table is used. The default session duration was increased from 48 hours to one week, so saved carts now last a week before being cleared.

Extensions or third-party code can still affect this by:

• Clearing the session table
• Changing wc_session_expiration to shorten cart lifespan
• Clearing sessions on logout (which also removes saved carts)

I also had colleagues confirm that persistent carts work correctly on their stores, and we have test coverage in place to ensure this does not regress.

If you find a plugin causing this, or custom snippet you've implemented, please let us know which one.
