Print from your phone or computer to an ImageWriter or a LaserWriter, over AirPrint. Nothing to install.

Connect an ImageWriter to AirWriter's printer port, or a LaserWriter over AppleTalk. Vintage Macs can print to the same printers, thanks to Tashtari's TashTalk.

What you need

  • A printer. An ImageWriter II, ImageWriter LQ or ImageWriter, or a PostScript LaserWriter. See Supported Printers.
  • For an ImageWriter, a crossover cable. An 8-pin mini-DIN cable wired like Apple's 590-0552 ("System/Peripheral-8"). Straight-through cables won't work; see Crossover cable. The original ImageWriter needs the 25-pin Mac cable instead.
  • For a LaserWriter, a connection. LocalTalk cabling to AirWriter's AppleTalk port, or your network.
  • USB-C power. Any 5 V phone charger.
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.

What to expect

  • Each printer appears on your phone or computer under its own name.
  • An ImageWriter prints on US Letter, with a quarter inch of margin at the sides and half an inch at the top and bottom, in color with a color ribbon. A full page of graphics takes a couple of minutes.
  • A LaserWriter prints at 300 dpi.
