I have been using Zed for about a year since I discovered it. Initially, when I used it, the AI features were just added in, and for me, it resulted in Zed freezing and freezing on restart with no way to get it out of the loop. So I stopped using it, being unable to.
I started using Zed for occasional code editing, on a very limited scale. I don't even know how you get some language support in Zed; one day it just appears, people install packages around you, and help you. The type of projects I am using with Zed is opening a folder as a project, and mostly configuration files or steering documents. I do not open any large files, log files.
If it's a Swift project, it's usually a very simple app— main screen and detail.
All of them are running 26.1. M1, M4, with 8, 24, 64 GB RAM.
The whole time I am using Zed, it may be idle for days or weeks, and one day it will allocate and eat all memory until there's no way to recover. It eats all available memory and then inevitably crashes the system.
But it happens regardless of which project or file I have opened— text, empty file, and regardless of the machine and RAM.
On one hand, there must be something wrong with me as my experience shows that memory crash is guaranteed, and I am using official releases.
And I haven't reported it because of how frequent it is, and I think everyone is fed up with that.
But some people use Zed, and I don't see crashes often. I only leave Zed open; I don't open any project or work. Yet once a month, completely idling Zed would allocate 55GB RAM and crash.
From my understa
OOPS, IT'S CRASHING RIGHT HERE 56GB eaten by Zed while I was typing this in a web form. So I need to save everything if I am running unprotected Zed.
from what I captured and analysed, created a bug report #51618
