- Security screen — per-IP rate limit, injection-phrase regex.
- Fast router (zero-latency, no LLM call) — classifies intent
(
chitchat / creator / list_all_faculty / people_by_area / general) with deterministic heuristics, and resolves anaphoric follow-ups: "did he have collaborators on this paper?" is anchored to the faculty member the conversation is actually about before retrieval runs (fix for issue #18). - Intent dispatch — deterministic executors:
- rosters served complete from the knowledge graph (never truncated by top-k),
- chitchat/creator answered without retrieval (no junk citations),
- everything else → hybrid retrieval: dense (MiniLM, pgvector HNSW, top-40) → BM25 re-score + RRF fusion (top-20) → cross-encoder re-rank → top-K.
- Context gate — low-confidence retrievals never reach the LLM; if nothing clears the bar the user gets an honest "couldn't find that" instead of a hallucination.
- Generation — streaming SSE with persona (EIRA), conversation history, personalization to user-stated interests, auto-continuation on token-cap truncation, suggested follow-up questions, and a deterministic course scrubber (ungrounded course numbers dropped mid-stream; if that empties the answer, an honest "couldn't find that course" fallback is emitted).
- Output guard — secret patterns redacted mid-stream; relevance-gated source citations; structured audit log per request.

Cloud Run Job ecen-reindex → crawl all pages, embed only changed chunks,
prune deleted pages, update Supabase.
Known trade-offs: scale-to-zero means a ~1 min cold start after idle
(masked by proxy retries + warm-up message); answer cache and stats counters
are per-instance in-memory; the query embedder must match the embedder used
at ingest time (EMBEDDING_MODEL) — switch both together and re-ingest.
