[appimaged] Clicking on dock icon launches second icon

In elementary OS 0.4 Loki, clicking on the RetroArch icon launches a second icon.
This is when I use appimaged.

Is this a bug in the elementary OS 0.4 Loki dock, plank?

May be related to the StartupWMClass= key in the desktop file.

Modern Linux desktop environments (Gnome 3, Ubuntu Unity, Docky) use the WMClass property to associate windows with the owning application. Many Java-based applications have the problem where the windows created by the application are not associated with the shortcut used to start the application (so the dock contains multiple copies of the same icon).
So the field called StartupWMClass is a string that defines in which class the application is grouped in the Unity Launcher at startup.
You can find out which WM_CLASS your window has got when you type in a terminal:
xprop WM_CLASS
and then click at the window. In case of the gnome terminal the output is as follows:
WM_CLASS(STRING) = "gnome-terminal", "Gnome-terminal"
So all windows with WM_CLASS "gnome-terminal" and "Gnome-terminal" are grouped together.

This bug happens on [dash to dock] too (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/307/dash-to-dock/) (the default ubuntu dock in 17.10).
Mannually adding StartupWMClass key in the .desktop file solve the problem.

@sylvaindumont can you give an example for an application where this does not happen without dash to dock but does happen with dash to dock? In that case, it may be a bug of dash to dock that should be reported to that project.

I haven't a unity desktop to test with unity, but without dash to dock, in the gnome 3 applications menu, the same thing happens, so it seems more related to gnome 3 than dash to dock.

It happens with every application I've launched via an appimage, I've tested with :

This does not happen in the Deepin dock, for example. (Tested with Upterm).

Maybe it has to do with the fact that the proper application icon does not show up for these Electron-based apps?
