@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Oct 08:59

Type Arabic on Windows the way you already text. Write Arabizi (mar7aba, 3ala, 2albi) in any app and
Type3arabi turns it into the Arabic you meant, with the most likely word already picked.

Type3arabi-1.1.4-x64.msi — Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit (contains the 64-bit and 32-bit keyboard, so 32-bit apps work
too). Type3arabi-x64.msi is the same file (the website's "latest" link). SHA-256 sums: SHA256SUMS.txt.

Not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows "Unknown publisher". Choose More info → Run anyway, ideally after
checking the SHA-256: Get-FileHash .\Type3arabi-1.1.4-x64.msi -Algorithm SHA256.

New in 1.1.4

  • Fixed: the diacritics editor jumped around in Google Docs and other Chrome pages. Adding a mark with a shortcut
moved the editor to another place on the screen (often the bottom left), and clicking a mark could move the editor
away from under the mouse, so the mark was not added. Chrome often can't say yet where the word is right after it
changes. Type3arabi then fell back to the mouse pointer's position. Now the editor stays next to your word.
  • New test: the diacritics editor (shortcut and mouse click) is now part of the IMM32 app checks too.

Updating

Installed Type3arabi from an MSI (1.0 or later)? Run the 1.1.4 MSI, then restart Windows (or at least close and
reopen Chrome and the other apps you type in). Your settings and learned words are kept. An app that is already open
keeps the old keyboard until it is closed.

Updating from 1.1.2 or older, and ever built Type3arabi yourself or ran regsvr32 on a preview build? See the
"ghost registration" check in the 1.1.3 notes.

Earlier in 1.1

  • Apps that use the older IMM32 way (Subtitle Edit 5, Avalonia, Qt 5, Java, SDL, many games) no longer freeze on the
    first letter (1.1.3).
  • Arabic (101) stays out of your keyboard list (checked every 5 minutes; can be turned off in Settings → Learning & privacy).
  • The switching shortcut always picks Type3arabi.
  • The word list shows above Windows Search and Settings' search box.
  • Uninstalling asks before erasing your learned words and settings.

Install

  1. Run the MSI. The page after the license lists what it adds. A restart is recommended at the end.
  2. Press Win+Space and pick Arabic · Type3arabi, or press Ctrl+Alt+A (your own shortcut can be set in Settings).
  3. Type mar7aba and press Space.

What's in it

  • A real Windows keyboard (TSF): one entry under Arabic, in every app.
  • Steps aside by itself: the browser's address bar and password fields get plain Latin — no switching back and forth.
  • Your word, already picked: Space inserts it, ↓ / click / mouse wheel pick another; Shift+Space keeps a word in Latin.
  • Reads your dialect automatically: Levantine, Egyptian, Gulf, Iraqi, Maghrebi and MSA.
  • ‎«اللّه»‎, «شكراً»‎ and Arabic punctuation ،‎ ؛‎ ؟‎ handled automatically.
  • Diacritics editor (Tab): any mark on any letter, several letters at once, ready-made vowellings.
  • Learns your choices, on this PC only; export/import them (.t3learn) or erase them.
  • Settings app: every shortcut editable (shortcuts Windows already uses are refused, with the reason); light/dark.
  • 100% offline: no account, no network, no telemetry. Privacy: https://type3arabi.com/privacy

Known limitations

  • Start menu search may add its own suggestion after your word (for example a whole sentence after «مرحباً»‎). That is Windows, not Type3arabi; pasting the word into Start shows the same.
  • In Chrome, the word list for the first word after you click into a field can briefly appear near the mouse pointer,
until the page reports where the word is.
  • x64 Windows only (ARM64 later). Egyptian has little training data yet.
  • Upgrading while apps use the keyboard finishes at the next restart.

Code: Apache-2.0. Language model (type3arabi.dat): CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 — provenance in DATASETS.md (two datasets are

New in 1.1.3 — please update

  • Fixed: some apps froze on the first letter (1.1.0 – 1.1.2). Apps that talk to keyboards the older way (IMM32) —
such as Subtitle Edit 5 and other apps built with Avalonia, Qt 5, Java or SDL, and many games — could hang right after
the first Arabizi letter: the word list stayed black, and Windows could show the "IME disabled" icon. Type3arabi kept
re-checking where the word was, and in these apps each check counted as a new move. It now stops as soon as the word
hasn't moved. Notepad, Word, browsers and Windows Search were not affected and work as before.
  • New test for these apps: every release is now also checked in an IMM32 app (64- and 32-bit), not only in
    modern ones.

Updating

Installed Type3arabi from an MSI (1.0 or later)? Run the 1.1.3 MSI, then restart Windows. Your settings and learned
words are kept. The restart matters: an app that is already open keeps the old keyboard until it is closed. That
includes an app that froze earlier, which may still be running in the background.

Ever built Type3arabi yourself, or ran regsvr32 on a preview build? That can leave a per-user registry entry (a
"ghost" registration) that overrides the installed keyboard. Every app of that kind (often all 32-bit apps) then keeps
loading the old preview DLL, with its old bugs, whatever version you install. The MSI never creates these entries.
Check in PowerShell (no admin needed):

$clsid = '{8A4B9277-1E2E-45E0-92A2-83FED833D8BF}'
"HKCU:\Software\Classes\CLSID\$clsid", "HKCU:\Software\Classes\WOW6432Node\CLSID\$clsid" | Where-Object { Test-Path -LiteralPath $_ }

No output: nothing to do. If it prints a path, remove it, then sign out and back in (or restart):

"HKCU:\Software\Classes\CLSID\$clsid", "HKCU:\Software\Classes\WOW6432Node\CLSID\$clsid" | Where-Object { Test-Path -LiteralPath $_ } | ForEach-Object { Remove-Item -LiteralPath $_ -Recurse }

This removes only Type3arabi's per-user entries. The installed keyboard (registered for the whole PC) is untouched.
From a source checkout, scripts\dev-uninstall.ps1 does the same plus a full cleanup.

New in 1.1.2

  • Arabic (101) stays out of your keyboard list. Windows sometimes put an Arabic (101) keyboard back in the
Win+Space list after a restart, next to Type3arabi, although you never chose it. Type3arabi removed it only in the
first minutes after sign-in, so a later one stayed. It now also checks every 5 minutes. It changes no setting and
never removes a keyboard you added yourself. You can turn the check off in Settings → Learning & privacy (the
first minutes after sign-in are still checked).
  • The switching shortcut always picks Type3arabi, even when Windows had loaded Arabic (101) first.

New in 1.1

  • The word list shows in Windows Search and Settings. Typing there already turned Arabizi into Arabic, but the list
of words stayed hidden behind the search panel. It now opens above it, as in every other app.
  • Uninstalling asks before it erases anything. The uninstall page has a checkbox, off by default: Also erase my
    learned word choices and settings
. The last page confirms that Type3arabi is uninstalled and, when you kept them,
that your learned words are still saved for a later reinstall.

Upgrading from 1.0 or 1.1: run the new MSI; your settings and learned words are kept.

Install

  1. Run the MSI. The page after the license lists what it adds. A restart is recommended at the end.
  2. Press Win+Space and pick Arabic · Type3arabi, or press Ctrl+Alt+A (your own shortcut can be set in Settings).
