Thanks, @arpad-m for all your work on this! This uses your original commits just pushed to a separate branch I can work on. I also filed #2327 while working on this. I started doing the work necessary to remove the old feature, but realized it's much more involved and wanted to keep this PR focused. |

Resolves #1652. This replaces #2184 since I'm unable to push changes to the topic branch and told @arpad-m I would finish up with changes we want to make to
