03 Warriors

Warriors are the primary combatants, they are the gladiators in BattleDrome. Each Warrior is owned by a player, and that player chooses how to develop the warrior, and what events the warrior participates in, etc.

Cosmetics

Warriors have several cosmetic details. Some are controlled by the player, but many are not. This is by design to simulate the natural differences between individuals.

  • Name - Name is chosen by the player AFTER creation of the warrior. Once a name is set, it is permanent!
  • Battle Color - Each warrior has a battle color, which replaces many of the detail colors on the rendered warrior. This can be selected at creation time of the warrior, but can never be altered after creation
  • Gender - The gender of the warrior is determined randomly at creation time
  • Skin tone - The skin tone of the warrior is determined randomly at creation time
  • Facial features - The eyes, nose, mouth, and hair, are all selected randomly at creation time.

Equipment

Warriors can use several types of equipment. At creation time you must select which type of weapon, shield, and armor the warrior will specialize in. This is a permanent decision, and can not be altered once the warrior is created.

Equipment Level

Equipment can have several levels, each level increases the strength of the effect provided by the equipment.

Equipment Wear

Each time a piece of equipment is used it has a random chance of receiving wear. This results in it's level being dropped by one point.

For example, each time a weapon connects with an enemy, it has a chance to wear, each time a shield blocks an attack, or each time armor is successfully hit, it has a chance to wear.

Equipment Effects

Different equipment types have different effects. All Equipment impacts the Warrior's attributes during combat. This does not change their attribute value directly, but has an effect on combat outcomes (it makes it so that the attribute virtually behaves as if it's higher when calculating that combat outcome).

In addition to this some equipment enables new abilities (Such as the Shield's ability to block etc), and/or directly affects combat in some way.

Weapons

Weapons have one of 4 classes. Each class has unique effects.

  • Slashing Weapons: Sword, Falchion
  • Cleaving Weapons: Broadsword, Axe
  • Bludgeoning Weapons: Mace, Hammer, and Flail
  • Extended Reach Weapons: Trident, Halberd, Spear

The effects these weapon types have is:

  • Slashing Weapons:
    • No Special Effects in Combat
    • Increases Dex
  • Cleaving Weapons:
    • Can bypass some damage reduction (negates some armor, or high constitution bonus)
    • Reduces Dex
    • Increases Str
  • Bludgeoning Weapons:
    • Can bypass some damage reduction (negates some armor, or high constitution bonus)
    • Can not be blocked by light or medium shields.
    • Heavily Reduces Dex
    • Increases Str
  • Extended Reach Weapons:
    • Gets an opportunity for a first-strike in each melee pairing (unless opponent also has ER weapon)
    • Increases Dex
    • Heavily Decreases Str

Shields

Shields impact the warrior's ability to absorb damage, as well as allows them the ability to occasionally block attacks entirely.

The effects different shield levels have:

  • No Shield
    • No Effect
  • Light Shield
    • slight increase in Constitution
    • slight decrease in Dexterity and Strength
    • Ability to block some attacks (but not attacks from heavy cleaving or bludgeoning weapons)
  • Medium Shield
    • Significant increase to Constitution
    • Significant decrease to Dexterity
    • slight decrease to Strength
    • Ability to block some attacks (but not attacks from heavy cleaving or bludgeoning weapons)
  • Heavy Shield
    • Huge increase in Constitution
    • Huge decrease to Dexterity
    • Significant decrease to Strength
    • Ability to block any and all attack types from any weapon.

Armor

Armor primarily affects the Warriors ability to absorb damage, while also affecting their agility/dexterity.

The effects different armor levels have:

  • Minimal Armor
    • slight reduction in Constitution
    • slight increase in Dexterity
  • Light Armor
    • No effect
  • Medium Armor
    • slight increase in Constitution
    • slight reduction in Dexterity
  • Heavy Armor
    • significant increase in Constitution
    • significant reduction in Dexterity

Potions

Potions can be used for healing, or for speeding up warrior advancement. There are 2 types of potions in BattleDrome:

  • Health Potions - Provide a certain amount of instant healing. Can be given manually to a warrior, OR if a warrior has them in the inventory during a battle, and the warrior's health is critically low, the warrior will automatically consume a potion to stay alive.
  • Intelligence Potions - Used to increase the rate of advancement of a warrior. Reducing the training/practice times required by a factor of 10. Note: to use these you simply purchase them. Any practice or training started with an intelligence potion in your inventory will automatically consume the potion and reflect the faster advancement time.

Attributes

A warrior's attributes dictate their performance in battle and various activities:

  • Constitution (CON) - This attribute determines the ability of a warrior to reduce damage received. And is the primary component in calculating the warrior's total hitpoints.
  • Strength (STR) - This attribute is used to determine how much damage a warrior will inflict on a successful strike. It is also the secondary attribute in determining the warrior's hitpoints (minor impact compared to CON)
  • Dexterity (DEX) - This attribute is used both to determine your warriors skill at accurately striking the target, as well as your ability to dodge blows, and escape combat altogether.
  • Luck - This is a special attribute (which is more costly in points to advance). Luck has a slight impact on die rolls in favor of your warrior. Increasing luck will give you a slight edge in all random outcomes.

Warrior Balance & Profit

Any and all fees paid to create, or upgrade a warrior are paid TO the warrior. This means that it increases their balance (the money is not lost, at least not yet...). And since you own that warrior, it's not really money spent, you can recover it at any time (with some exceptions).

Retiring

A warrior can be retired at any time that they are "Idle" in order to reclaim 100% of their balance back to you, their owner. However be warned, that doing this means the warrior will be forever retired, and no longer able to participate or advance in any way! They will be immortalized in your warrior "stable" going forward (eventually you will be able to filter out retired warriors in the UI).

It is a big decision on when you should retire a warrior. Do you risk that next battle? Knowing they might lose some of their balance? But you might also gain more!

Earning

Warriors earn balance in a number of ways:

  • As mentioned above, all fees paid by you go to the warrior
  • Every time a warrior defeats another warrior they take HALF their balance!
  • Warriors win a prize pool for being the winner overall of an event

Each time your warrior earns some money, a very small portion of it is forwarded to you their owner (think of it as income-tax for your warriors!). This provides a slow earning channel via your warrior if they are successful.

Losing Balance

As mentioned warriors can be defeated in battle, meaning they could lose HALF of their balance! But don't worry, it's always only Half. So via this method a warrior can never lose ALL of their money.

ie: if a warrior has 100 Finney to start, and loses in a match, he now has 50 finney. If he then enters another match and loses again, he now has 25, etc... The number may get smaller, but will never reach zero.

In addition, the warrior must pay an "Entry Fee" to enter an event. Note that you the player don't pay this directly, the warrior does (though you can choose to pay the warrior directly, to give them the money to afford this if you wish).

These fees go to the prize pool, which is split between the crew, and the winner.
