Jailbreaking your headset

Warning

There is a risk of bricking your headset by jailbreaking it, while we've done our best to make sure the jailbreak is as safe as possible (in testing, we haven't seen any bricked or damaged hardware as a result of using the jailbreak utility normally), there is always risks with this kind of thing. Please do not paste random commands into the shell of the headset if you are unaware as to what they will do. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY BRICKED OR DAMAGED HARDWARE THAT MAY HAPPEN OR OCCUR BY USAGE OF THIS UTILITY.

Note

The jailbreak is NOT PERSISTENT, this means that each time the headset is shut down (red LED on the headset), you will have to RUN THE JAILBREAK AGAIN when you power on the headset before launching SteamVR. We have plans in the future to make this more seamless, but for now, you will have to do this manually.

Prerequisites

  • The latest release of PSVR2Updater (download build-release-windows-latest.zip for Windows or build-release-ubuntu-latest.zip for Linux, and extract it).
  • The latest release of vr2jb (download the ZIP and extract it).
  • A headset running firmware version 6.00, as the jailbreak only works on firmware version 6.00.
    • If you don't know what firmware version your headset is running, there is a guide below to check.
    • If your headset is running a newer/older firmware version, you will have to downgrade/update to firmware version 6.00 (respectively).
      • This means that if you use your headset on PS5, it will try to update the firmware. You should either stop using your headset on PS5, or buy another headset, downgrade each time you connect it back to your PC, or don't jailbreak at all.
        • Updating the firmware has the risk of making downgrading impossible (if Sony patches it) in the future, while currently this is not a problem, you should try avoiding firmware updates. You have been warned.
      • You will need to acquire PS VR2 firmware version 6.00 (if you don't have it, you can download it from here).

Please note that this page is primarily targeted towards Windows users. Although we fully support Linux, making this page have the correct information for a small subset of users is not currently a priority, especially due to not every Linux distro/DE/WM being the same (thus making the page pointless). If you use Linux, you will have to loosely follow this page. Sorry!

Checking your firmware version

If you already know the firmware version of your headset is 6.00, you can ignore this guide entirely.

  1. Power on your headset (if it's not already turned on), ensuring that the PS VR2 app and SteamVR are closed (or anything else using the headset).
  2. In the folder where PSVR2Updater was extracted, while holding down the shift key, right click on an empty part of the folder and click "Open PowerShell window here".
  3. In the new PowerShell window, type .\PSVR2Updater.exe, press the enter key and you should see some information in the window about the current firmware version of your headset.
  4. Ensure that the recovery version does not start with 0x0610 (6.10), 0x07 (7.xx) or a higher number. If your recovery version is newer than 6.00, you will be unable to downgrade your headset to firmware version 6.00, and thus, unable to jailbreak.

Entering recovery mode (for downgrading)

If your headset is already running firmware version 6.00, you should ignore this guide entirely and follow the jailbreak guide. However, for headsets running older firmware versions, you should follow the update guide.

  1. Power on your headset (if it's not already turned on), ensuring that the PS VR2 app and SteamVR are closed (or anything else using the headset).
  2. In the folder where vr2jb was extracted, while holding down the shift key, right click on an empty part of the folder and click "Open PowerShell window here".
  3. In the new PowerShell window, type .\vr2jb.exe downgrade, press the enter key and follow the instructions in the window.
  4. Assuming you did everything correctly after following the instructions, your headset should be in recovery mode. You can now follow the update guide.

Updating your firmware version (to 6.00)

If your headset is already running firmware version 6.00, you should ignore this guide entirely and follow the jailbreak guide.

  1. Power on your headset (if it's not already turned on), ensuring that the PS VR2 app and SteamVR are closed (or anything else using the headset).
  2. In the folder where PSVR2Updater was extracted, while holding down the shift key, right click on an empty part of the folder and click "Open PowerShell window here".
  3. In the new PowerShell window, type .\PSVR2Updater.exe, then press space, and then drag and drop the acquired PS VR2 firmware version 6.00 CUP file into the window, press the enter key and your headset should proceed to update.
  4. Assuming nothing fails, your headset should be running firmware version 6.00. You can now follow the jailbreak guide.

Running the jailbreak

If your headset is not running firmware version 6.00, this guide will not work, please check your firmware and downgrade/update your headset.

  1. Power on your headset (if it's not already turned on), ensuring that the PS VR2 app and SteamVR are closed (or anything else using the headset).
  2. In the folder where vr2jb was extracted, simply run the vr2jb.exe binary and your headset will be jailbroken, enjoy!
  • Once jailbroken, features such as headset vibration, and the eye tracking camera feed (for Babble or other eye tracking apps) will be unlocked.

Note

Any time your headset is shut down (and as long as your headset is running firmware version 6.00), you will have to follow the jailbreak guide again.
