Standalone
This guide explains how to set up MagicChatbox for standalone VR usage, such as with an Oculus/Meta Quest headset.
The goal is to make MagicChatbox send its information from your Windows device directly to your standalone VR headset through your local network.
Before starting, make sure you have the following:
- A working Windows device
- For example, a low-end laptop or desktop PC
- A standalone VR headset
- For example, Oculus Quest / Meta Quest
- The MagicChatbox software
- A working internet connection
- Your Windows device and VR headset connected to the same Wi-Fi network
Important
Your PC and VR headset must be connected to the same network. Otherwise, MagicChatbox will not be able to send information to your headset.
Before we can create a standalone connection, a few things need to be prepared on your desktop, VR headset, and inside VRChat.
First, prepare MagicChatbox on your Windows device.
- Download and install MagicChatbox from the Releases section.
- Open the MagicChatbox software.
- Go to the Options tab.
- Open the App-Options sub-tab.
Next, you need to find the local IPv4 address of your standalone headset.
- Start your VR headset.
- Open the Settings app.
- Find and open your Internet / Wireless-LAN / Wi-Fi settings.
- Locate your home Wi-Fi network.
- Click on the ⓘ icon or anything related to showing more information.
- Optional: If needed, click on Show Advanced Information.
- Find and remember your headset’s IPv4 address.
The IPv4 address usually looks similar to this:
192.168.x.xNote
Make sure you save or remember this IPv4 address. You will need it later inside MagicChatbox.
Now you need to enable OSC inside VRChat.
- Open VRChat on your standalone headset.
- Open your VRChat settings.
- Locate your OSC Settings.
- Enable the OSC Connection setting.
Important
OSC must be enabled inside VRChat. If OSC is disabled, MagicChatbox will not be able to send information into the game.
After finishing the setup steps, MagicChatbox needs to know where it should send its information.
This means we have to replace the local target IP with the IPv4 address of your VR headset.
-
Open the MagicChatbox software.
-
If you followed the previous steps, you should still be inside:
- Options
- App-Options
-
Find the field called Local IP address.
- Replace the current value with the IPv4 address you copied from your VR headset earlier.
Example:
192.168.x.x- Save or apply the change if necessary.
After entering the headset IP address, you can test if the standalone connection works.
- Make sure your VR headset is still connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Windows device.
- Make sure VRChat is open.
- Make sure OSC is enabled in VRChat.
- Activate one of the available MagicChatbox modules.
- Check if the Chatbox output appears in-game.
If everything was set up correctly, MagicChatbox should now transmit information to your standalone VRChat session.
If MagicChatbox does not show anything in-game, check the following points:
- Make sure your Windows device and VR headset are connected to the same Wi-Fi.
- Make sure you entered the correct IPv4 address.
- Make sure the IPv4 address belongs to your VR headset, not your PC.
- Make sure VRChat is running on your standalone headset.
- Make sure OSC is enabled inside VRChat.
- Restart VRChat after enabling OSC if it still does not work.
- Make sure MagicChatbox is running on your Windows device.
- Make sure you changed the Local IP address field to your headset’s IPv4 address.
- Make sure at least one module is enabled.
- Try restarting MagicChatbox after changing the IP address.
If the connection still does not work, your Windows firewall may be blocking the connection.
Try the following:
- Allow MagicChatbox through Windows Firewall.
- Restart MagicChatbox as administrator.
- Check if your antivirus software is blocking network communication.
Standalone support depends on your local network connection.
If your headset IP address changes, you may need to update the IP address inside MagicChatbox again.
This can happen after:
- Restarting your router
- Reconnecting your headset to Wi-Fi
- Switching networks
- Restarting the headset
Once everything is set correctly, MagicChatbox should work with standalone VRChat without needing PCVR.
