Even though an early focus of Life123 is at the cellular and sub-cellular level, communication between cells is definitely envisioned.

In particular, communication between distant cells that doesn't rely on diffusion, but rather on large-scale circulation (such as blood vessels.) An element of such a model could be a mechanism to quickly transport cellular secretions to distant cells as a form of communication ("hormones.")

For this, and other, reasons, starting with the Beta 14 release, the BioSim1D class (handling data structure, diffusion and reactions in 1D) got converted from static to instantiated. The counterparts in 2- and 3-D will follow suit in upcoming releases.
