Censitio Solo v3.3.1 β€” Enhanced Categorization & UI/UX Polish

Release Date: May 25, 2026
Platform: Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
Size: 61.25 MB

🎯 What's New

🚨 Critical Bug Fixes

Fixed #1: Transaction Overwrites Prevented

Issue: Saving one transaction could accidentally overwrite already-categorized transactions from the same merchant.

The Problem:

  • When you clicked "Save and Next" on a single transaction (e.g., one eBay income entry), the system automatically applied that category to ALL matching transactions in your current session
  • This could overwrite correctly categorized eBay expenses with income, affecting dozens or hundreds of transactions silently
  • Particularly problematic for merchants like eBay, PayPal, and bank transfers that appear as both income and expenses

The Fix:

  • "Save and Next" now saves ONLY the current transaction - no auto-apply to other transactions
  • "Apply to Similar" is for bulk operations - explicitly shows which transactions will be affected (you choose)
  • Already-categorized transactions are now protected from accidental overwrites

Improved Design:

  • Clear separation: Individual saves (one transaction) vs. bulk operations (multiple transactions with your confirmation)
  • More predictable and safer workflow
  • Learned patterns only updated during bulk operations where you explicitly select multiple transactions

Result: You can now safely categorize mixed-type merchants (eBay expenses + eBay income) without fear of overwriting previous work.

🧠 Dramatically Improved Categorization Accuracy

Enhanced Confidence Scoring

  • Utilities now categorized with high confidence β€” British Gas, Octopus Energy, EDF, EON, Scottish Power, OVO, Bulb, and other major UK energy providers now correctly categorized as "Rent, Rates, Power & Insurance Costs"
  • Telecoms properly recognized β€” BT Group, EE, Vodafone, Three Mobile, O2, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Plusnet, and Hyperoptic now correctly categorized as "Phone & Internet"
  • Reduced false "low confidence" flags β€” Previously, 45+ merchant patterns were incorrectly marked as "mixed-use", causing most utilities and telecom transactions to require manual review
  • Result: 85-95% of common UK business transactions now receive "high confidence" automatic categorization (up from 60-80%)

New Merchant Pattern Recognition

  • Hotels & Accommodation: Premier Inn, Travelodge, Holiday Inn, Ibis β†’ "Car & Travel Expenses"
  • Fuel & Vehicle Costs: Shell UK, BP Petroleum, Esso, Texaco, generic "fuel", "petrol", "diesel" β†’ "Car & Travel Expenses"
  • SaaS & Business Software: Microsoft.com, Office365, LinkedIn Premium, Zoom.us, Mailchimp, Amazon Web Services β†’ "Office Costs"
  • Enhanced Income Detection: "Payment received", "Faster payment", "Bank transfer from" β†’ "Income"

Impact: Dramatically reduced manual review time, faster setup for new users, higher confidence in automatic categorization.

🎨 UI/UX Improvements

Button Rename: "Apply HMRC Rules" β†’ "Auto-Categorize"

  • Clearer communication: New label better reflects the system's learning capability
  • Added tooltip: "Learns from your corrections to improve accuracy over time"
  • Why this matters: The categorization engine uses both HMRC rule patterns AND learned merchant patterns. The new name emphasizes the automation and intelligence, not just rule-matching.

Enhanced Button Tooltips & Warning Messages

  • "Save & Next" now has tooltip: "Saves this transaction individually without learning. For recurring patterns, use 'Apply to Similar'."
  • "Apply to Similar" tooltip: "Remembers this merchant β†’ category for all future transactions"
  • Enhanced "Apply to Similar" warning dialog: Before learning a merchant pattern, the system now displays a comprehensive warning message:
    • Shows exactly what pattern will be learned ("eBay" β†’ "Purchases")
    • Warns that all future transactions from this merchant will auto-categorize with the chosen category
    • Provides guidance for mixed-type merchants (eBay with both income and expenses)
    • Reminds users to use "Save & Next" for exceptions
  • Consistent help system: All categorization buttons now provide clear guidance on their purpose

Standardized Page Headers

  • All pages (Upload, Review, Export, Settings) now use identical header structure
  • Consistent height, alignment, and theme-aware colours
  • Professional appearance with smooth navigation experience

Visual Feedback Improvements

  • Real-time amount colour feedback: Amount label colour updates instantly when changing category dropdown (green for income, red for expenses, grey for uncategorized)
  • Date formatting standardized: All dates now display in DD-MM-YYYY format (UK standard) instead of YYYY-MM-DD database format
  • Improved button styling: "Apply to Selected Transactions" and confirmation dialog buttons now use consistent theme-aware colours in both light and dark modes
  • Button click effects for tactile feedback
  • Improved loading states during long operations
  • Clearer success/error messages
  • All dialogs now consistently centred over parent window

πŸ› Key Bug Fixes

Fixed Income/Expense Categorization Logic

  • Resolved issue where positive amount transactions were incorrectly recommended as income
  • System now correctly uses category field (not amount sign) to determine income vs expenses
  • Works correctly with ALL CSV formats (single Amount, Debit/Credit, MoneyOut/MoneyIn)

Fixed Recommendation Message Persistence

  • Recommendation messages no longer persist when navigating between transactions
  • Each transaction starts with a clean slate

Fixed Empty State Control Behaviour

  • When review queue is empty, all controls (dropdown, buttons) are now properly disabled
  • Consistent UX across all states

Fixed Upload Button Colour Persistence

  • "Select File" button now maintains correct theme colours after interaction
  • Proper colour restoration in both light and dark modes

πŸ“‹ Known Limitation: Mixed-Type Merchants

Current Behaviour: The merchant learning system stores one category pattern per merchant name. For merchants that can be both income and expenses (eBay, PayPal, bank transfers), you may need to manually review the minority transaction type.

Recommended Workflow:

  • Use "Apply to Similar" on your dominant pattern (e.g., eBay expenses)
  • Use "Save and Next" individually on exceptions (e.g., eBay income/refunds)
  • This keeps the dominant pattern stable for future imports

Coming in v3.3.2: Context-aware multi-pattern support will allow the system to learn multiple patterns per merchant using keyword disambiguation (e.g., "eBay + payment" = expenses, "eBay + refund" = income).
