General information

This page includes the general information of RSS-Origin 2, to address any questions you may have.

What is RSS-Origin 2?

  • RSS-Origin 2 is the successor to RSS-Origin, more precisely, to RSS-Origin CelestialPack.

  • RSS-Origin 2 is an addon pack based on Sol, a modern, higher quality alternative to both RealSolarSystem and KSRSS.

  • RSS-Origin 2 particularly focuses on bringing extra real-world asteroids, comets, dwarf planets, natural satellites, interstellar objects and so on into Kerbal Space Program, in a much higher quality compared to its predecessor. There are currently 266 extra objects in the mod, 18 of which have been merged into Sol base pack, therefore 248 extra celestial objects to Sol system.

RSS-Origin 2 features not only quantity, but also quality. RSS-Origin 2 relies on the base of Sol, is able to utilize the latest advancements in KSP planet modding technology, includes:

  • Parallax Continued terrain shaders and scatters.
  • Custom parallax scaled shaders derived from real photometric models for improved realism.
  • Custom PQSMods that allow for higher-quality 16-bit maps and filtering methods, and fast-loading.

RSS-Origin 2 is dedicated to the realism and scientific nature of every celestial body, features:

  • Orbital data derived from real ephemerides or latest astronomy literature.
  • Physical properties (size, shape, mass, rotation, color, etc.) derived from measured data and latest astronomy findings, or reasonable assumption based on existing data.
  • Real 3D models and textures for celestial bodies visited by spacecraft.
  • Spin axis tilt derived from latest astronomy research and irregular gravitational model correctly calculated based on 3D shape (needs Principia).

Why RSS-Origin 2?

RSS-Origin 2 is designed to be played as an addon of Sol. Sol is intended to be a modern version alternative to RealSolarSystem and KSRSS, and functions as a successor to RSS-Reborn. Sol stands on the shoulders of predecessors, is capable of bringing a much better gaming experience.

RSS-Origin 2 focuses solely on adding extra celestial bodies. RSS-Origin, its predecessor, has 4 different parts, 3 of which have been successfully integrated into Sol, leaving RSS-Origin CelestialPack. Without distraction, RSS-Origin 2 can focus on inheriting RSS-Origin CelestialPack's mantle, and improving it to a higher level.

RSS-Origin 2 has undergone comprehensive improvements compared to its predecessor:

  • More celestial bodies.
  • More detailed textures and models.
  • Up-to-date orbital and physical properties.
  • Cutting-edge KSP planet technology implemented.

RSS-Origin 2 offers more flexibility compared to its predecessor:

  • With the support of Sol's configuration option, RSS-Origin 2 provides the ability to follow the changing of System Scales (Real, Quarter, Stock) and System Reference Frames (ICRF, Ecliptic).
  • Features in-game orbit plotter for non-Principia players. It allows instantaneous toggling of orbit lines, switching of orbit icon modes, quick focusing on a target, and more.
  • More flexible download and installation options are available. RSS-Origin 2 can be installed manually or through CKAN [not implemented]. Both ways use minor-planet groups and relative object sizes for the categorization and distribution of installation packages. In addition, MissionPacks that include objects visited by historical, ongoing, and planned deep-space missions are also available. For manual installation, standalone packs for each celestial body or celestial system can be found on the corresponding celestial Wiki page. [not implemented]

Why not Sol-Origin?

Calling the mod Sol-Origin is totally fine. Early on in RSS-Origin 2's development, it's been planned to be an addon compatible with RSS, KSRSS, RSS-Reborn, and Sol. As development progresses, I gradually realized that maintaining the compatibility with 4 different mods would be a complete disaster. At that time I had the thought to change RSS-Origin 2's name to Sol-Origin, but the name "RSS-Origin 2" has already been known for quite a long time. So the renaming plan was abandoned.
