Technical Information

This page contains precautions, suggestions and other technical details for using RSS-Origin 2, as well as some known issues that cannot be resolved at the moment.

Precautions:

For Principia players, please note:

  • CAN add new celestial bodies to the game before starting a new save.
  • CAN remove any number of added celestial bodies from the game before starting a new save.
  • CANNOT load existing saves after adding/removing any number of celestial bodies to/from the game. If your game crashes at loading without warning, this might be the cause.

Non-Principia players can add/remove any number of celestial bodies at any time without crashing. But be careful if you have any existing spacecraft orbiting or landed on them.

Suggestions:

As RSS-Origin 2 adds up to 248 extra celestial bodies to Sol system, plus 51 celestial bodies from Sol system, the total number reaches 299, which may cause lag during time acceleration, slow down scene switching, or even affect FPS during normal gameplay. Given that, you might not want to install all celestial bodies at once, especially when playing with Principia.

Folder structure and specific operations for manually adding/removing celestial bodies:

RSS-Origin 2 utilizes a hierarchical folder structure categorized by minor-planet groups, where each celestial body and celestial system is placed in a separate folder under its category and superior categories.

The general path is: GameData/RSSOrigin2/Level-1-category/Level-2-category/Level-...-category/CelestialFolder

Inside a CelestialFolder there are several .cfg files and a folder called "PluginData", which contains all the textures used by this celestial body. You might NOT want to change or move any config and texture files inside a CelestialFolder.

The complete tree diagram of all categories can be found [here].

You can manually add or remove celestial folders according to your own needs. Steps for removing: (Eris for example. Adding is the reverse)

  1. Go to folder GameData/RSSOrigin2.
  2. Locate the CelestialFolder of Eris with the help of tree diagram and celestial wiki. Correct path: GameData/RSSOrigin2/MinorPlanets/TNOs/SDOs/136199-Eris
  3. Remove the folder of Eris from GameData - cut-and-paste to somewhere outside GameData or delete.

Known issues:

  • Celestial bodies with radius under 409m will trigger a rendering bug, for example Bennu (radius 245m), Itokawa (radius 162m). This issue had been seen in RSS-Origin. To avoid this issue in RSS-Origin 2, a ScaleFix multiplier has been applied to those celestial bodies as a temporary workaround.
  • After installing a large number of celestial bodies with Principia, when the Plotting Frame Selection interface is fully expanded, the game will become extremely laggy. Reducing the number of expanded celestial bodies or closing the interface can solve this problem.
  • There may be some bugs for unknown reasons when approaching the surface of small asteroids with moons, after entering and leaving their moon's sphere of influence. Switching to the tracking station and then switch back to the vessel can solve this problem.
