Is it safe to assume that port 7834 will be free?

I wanted to suggest listening on an ephemeral port (listen(0)), but that's not very friendly for long-running services that may be occasionally restarted.

I propose to support PORT environment variable, which has become a standard in the cloud world. (See also https://12factor.net/config.) IMO, the env var is more important than a CLI arg.

It isn't, but you can just pass a different port in that case.
