What this work is

Per-chapter hermeneutic lens guidance — short (80-280 char) interpretive entries that explain how to read each chapter through one of eight hermeneutical lenses (grammatical, literary, typological, redemptive, christocentric, canonical, devotional, mission). Each chapter typically gets 2-5 lenses, never all 8. Rare theology peaks (e.g. Joshua 24, Ruth 4, 2 Samuel 7, 1 Kings 8) get 5-6.

The DB schema for this is already wired. Your job is content authoring + pipeline execution.

Hard non-negotiables

1. Never push to master. Always feature branch → PR → merge.
2. Generators go in /tmp/. Never commit /tmp/gen_*.py. Delete after run.
3. Before authoring any book, run a scholar-set inventory on its source chapters (see "Pre-flight scout" below). Don't trust the scholar set from a sibling book — every Historical book uses a different one. This is the single most common failure mode if skipped.
4. chapter_id format must be verified per book. It's not always <bookprefix><N>. Joshua is josh1, Judges is judg1, Ruth is ru1, 1 Samuel is 1sa1, 1 Chronicles is 1ch1. Check the actual chapter_id field in content/{book}/1.json before authoring.
5. All entries must score 100/100 on lens_quality_scorer.py. No exceptions. Floor in CI is 90 but we aim higher.
6. All in-chapter verse refs must use explicit vN / vvN-M form (e.g. vv 4-9, v 16). Cross-book refs use Book ch:v form (e.g. Mt 4:4, Heb 11:30). The scorer enforces in-chapter bounds against the chapter's max_v.
7. Every NT citation must be a position scholars genuinely hold. No fabricated attributions. If you're not sure whether Paul actually quotes a given verse at a given location, omit the claim or rephrase to avoid attribution.

Expected output to capture:

• The exact chapter_id format (e.g. judg1, ru1, 1sa1).
• The dictionary of per-chapter max verses.
• The top 4-5 scholar keys that appear consistently across chapters. These become your panel-mix scholars.

Bake the scout output into your generator. Hardcode the scholar set, hardcode the MAX_VERSE dict, hardcode the chapter_id prefix. Don't recompute at generator runtime.

Coverage strategy: curated sparse

Average ~3 lenses/chapter. Theology peaks get more; procedural/genealogy chapters get less.

General density guide:

• 2 lenses: genealogies, boundary lists, repetitive procedural narratives, regnal-formula chapters
• 3 lenses: standard narrative chapters with one or two clear theological angles
• 4 lenses: narrative chapters with multiple distinct theological motifs, or chapters that introduce a key figure
• 5 lenses: theology peaks — substantial NT citation density, multiple lens-specific angles all justified
• 6 lenses: rare; reserve for chapters that genuinely warrant 6 distinct angles. The Pentateuch had 4 such chapters total

Per-book theology peaks to identify in your scout (these are flags for 5-6 lens density, not exhaustive):

• Judges: judg2 (cycles framework), judg6-8 (Gideon), judg13-16 (Samson). judg17-21 sparse (epilogue narratives are dark, not theological-peak — anchor on canonical patterns)
• 1 Samuel: 1sa3 (call of Samuel), 1sa8 (kingship demand → Acts 13:21), 1sa15 (Saul rejected), 1sa16 (David anointed → 1 Pet 2:9), 1sa17 (Goliath → Christ-as-David typology), 1sa28 (witch of Endor — careful, sparse)

Plagiarism guards

The lens scorer's plagiarism check (60% word overlap with the chapter's themes panel) catches blatant restatement but misses subtler failures. Read the themes-panel text for each chapter before authoring and:

1. Anchor different lenses on different verse ranges within the chapter. If christocentric anchors on vv 4-9, literary should not also anchor on vv 4-9 unless absolutely warranted (and even then, find a different angle on the same verses — e.g. christocentric reads NT citation, literary reads Hebrew structure).
2. Don't restate the chapter's themes panel in any lens. Find a different lexical handle.
3. For multi-lens chapters at NT-cited peaks (e.g. 2sa7, 1ki8), let one or two lenses share the headline-citation but anchor others elsewhere. Example pattern from Joshua 24: christocentric anchors on Mt 6:24 / vv 14-15; canonical anchors on the two-ways thread (Deut 30:19, 1 Kgs 18:21, Mt 7:13-14); literary anchors on vv 1-13's twentyfold-I divine recital. Same chapter, three different angles.

Rubric token traps to avoid

The scorer's must_have_one_of check is substring-based and case-insensitive. Three traps:

1. Lens-name substring trap. "type" is NOT a substring of "typological" (typ-OLOGICAL vs typ-E). Don't rely on the lens name in its own entry. Use a real rubric token.
2. Word-form trap. "structure" is the literary token; "structural" does NOT contain "structure" as substring. Use "structure" or "narrative structure" or "literary form" — verify the exact substring.
3. Cross-lens token poaching. "thread" is a canonical token; do not use it in typological entries (use "pattern," "foreshadow," "prefigures" instead). "pattern" is a typological token; do not use it in canonical entries (use "thread," "echoes," "alludes" instead).

The full rubric token lists per lens are in _tools/lens_rubrics.json. Read it before authoring.

• Do not re-run the full lens_quality_scorer.py — score per-chapter to avoid harness timeouts.
• Do not invent NT citations. If you're uncertain whether Paul actually quotes a given verse, omit the claim.
• Do not stage app/assets/db-manifest.json or app/assets/explore-images.json. They drift on every build; revert them before git add.
• Do not use 6-lens density on procedural chapters. Reserve 6 for genuine theology peaks (rare).
• Do not assume Pentateuch scholars (craigie, tigay, milgrom, ashley, alter, sarna) appear in Historical Books. They don't. Use the per-book scout output.
