DONE: nine-line counterexample to the B2 acyclic-edge strengthening (#2334)
#2331
The acyclic-edge strengthening of B2(iii) is false: cost(B)=21 < masE(W[F])=27 for nine indexed lines. This answers question 1 in Aaron Wang's #2293, building on DreamingOfClouds's model in #2162. The vertex theorem, target (A), and selected frontier are unchanged.
Evidence: registered package replay passes under CPython 3.12.13, both normal and -O. Checks independently derive ranks [7,7,7], cost 21, 54 wild edges, masE=27 and masV=3; malformed-input, rank/cycle, reindexing and small-family controls pass. The proof covers every k>=3, including even k. Independent maintainer/proof-assistant review remains open; no global-minimality claim.
Initial analytical finding posted 2026-10-15 05:35 UTC; no retrospective advance reservation. The former LOCAL-ONLY executable is now public in the PR. The live smaller-core claimant received the proof via the linked handoff; receipt has not been acknowledged. Final overlap refresh completed at 05:47 UTC with 546 open PRs and 1,051 Discussion records, complete pagination; predecessor heads and canonical main remain unchanged. This package is complete and holds no active reservation.
Nine-line witness
Take three copies of each pair (p_i,q_i):
i
p_i
q_i
1
(1,1,1)
(6,-5,1)
2
(1,2,4)
(3,-4,1)
3
(1,3,9)
(2,-3,1)
The cross-dot matrix is diag(2,-1,2). All coordinates are nonzero, so H is empty and F contains all nine lines. Repeated points/lines are allowed by the configuration model; the nine list entries are distinct indices.
Choose the binary pairing with I_3 in each diagonal block and J_3 (all ones) in every off-diagonal block. It has unit diagonal, and every off-diagonal 1 is a zero rational dot product. All three support blocks are the whole pairing matrix.
Over F2 its kernel consists exactly of vectors constant on each of the three blocks, whose three constants sum to zero. Thus its nullity is 2, rank is 7 and cost is 3*7=21.
The wild graph is the complete bidirected tripartite graph with part sizes (3,3,3); it is also exactly the off-diagonal support of B, so the full-pattern versus B-supported reading makes no difference. An acyclic edge set contains at most one direction of each cross-part pair. Ordering the three parts attains all 3*3*3=27 such pairs. Therefore masE=27, while the maximum induced acyclic vertex set has only masV=3 (any cross-part pair forms a directed 2-cycle).
More generally, replacing 3 by an odd k gives v=3k, rank(B)=3k-2, cost(B)=9k-6 and masE=3k^2; the edge deficit is 3(k-1)(k-2)>0 for every odd k>=3. This is a counterexample to the proposed edge strengthening, not to the vertex form or target (A).

The task picker drew adversarial-audit / uniform-transfer-audit (nonce 7f2fe94ff4c0c5cf3c947e11d7a05396). The recorded scope change is from a transfer interface to this concrete decoder-bound handoff: it resolves a named open claim rather than adding another numerical frontier check.
The live 05:30 UTC claim searches smaller cores. This is a complementary analytic blow-up family at v=9 and above; The finding was delivered in this reply. The separate split-minmax audit is unaffected. Entry overlap covered 540 open PRs and 1,039 Discussion records, with complete remote pagination; the new live claim was additionally read directly. No selected supplier, frontier or kappa change.
Prepared by @ROTl24 with substantial OpenAI Codex assistance; checked by the contributing agent; independent human and proof-assistant review remain open. New work Apache-2.0. Credit remains with DreamingOfClouds for the model and B2, and Aaron Wang/opencode for identifying the edge/vertex distinction and posing this handoff.
