The firefox shell command

DayDve edited this page Oct 23, 2026 · 3 revisions

The firefox shell command can start the Firefox installed by MyFox. It is off by default.

myfox command               # the state
myfox command on # turn it on
myfox command off # turn it off

To turn it on at install: the "Shell command" checkbox in the form or the --firefox-command flag.

~/.local/bin/firefox is a link to <install folder>/firefox-myfox.

If a firefox is already there

An existing ~/.local/bin/firefox is renamed to firefox.myfox-backup and put back when the command is turned off and when MyFox is uninstalled.

Flag Action
off --keep-backup don't put it back, leave firefox.myfox-backup

If firefox.myfox-backup already exists and another file is in place of firefox, turning the command on is refused.

Checks

Before turning it on, MyFox warns if:

  • ~/.local/bin is not in PATH;
  • a directory with another firefox comes earlier in PATH.

A shell alias or function named firefox takes precedence over the command. An already open terminal may need hash -r.

For programs

--json: no questions, the result as JSON; see Integration with about:myfox.
