COMPASS unable to generate cover or thumbnail in Windows 11

Describe the bug
I have a new Windows 11 PC. COMPASS is unable to generate covers from pdfs, get covers from Open Library or generate thumbnails when I provide an image for the cover.

Expected behavior
Cover to generate from pdf file, COMPASS to get covers from Open Library and generate thumbnails when an image is provided.

All these features work on my Windows 10 pc for the same files. Also there is an entry for the Call of Cthulhu Keeper's rule

book on the Open Library website.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Go to Add Books
2. Click on Add Books
3. Click on Import File(s)
4. Select pdf file and click on Open
5. Failed to generate cover from & Failed to get cover from OpenLibrary

System info (please complete the following information):

• OS: Windows 11 Pro 23H2
• Release Version 22631.5039

One potential problem that results in this behaviour that I have seen once before is that the folder where all the images for COMPASS are saved doesn't exist for some reason. And because the image cannot be saved anywhere, it fails.

In COMPASS, could you go to Settings > Manage Data > Browse Local Files, then in the file explorer that appears, open the "Collections" folders, then the "Default collection" folder. And check if there is a folder called "CoverArt" and a folder called "Thumbnails". If not, create them and it should solve your problem.

A better solution might be to have COMPASS check to see if the folder exists and if not create it or prompt the user for permission to create the folder (or specify where it should be created). This avoids this type of silent failure. :-)

I am aware that that would be a lot better. I planned to fix it when this issue was first raised on the discord but must have forgotten about it. I'll try to release a fix this weekend.

Can you confirm that this was indeed your issue and that those folders were missing? Otherwise I will need to see the log file to further diagnose the problem.

Thanks for the responses. I created CoverArt and Thumbnails sub folders and it seems to be working now when generating covers.

Awesome, I'll close this issue when I have released a fix that automatically creates the folders if they're missing.
