• install NixOS on old machine using a NixOS iso on live USB w/ graphical installer
• install NixOS WSL on Win machine
• explore generated configuration.nix (sudo nano /etc/nixos/configuration.nix)
• install every day programs (git, ..., thunderbird, pyenv, poetry, neovim etc.) using configuration.nix
• rebuild nix: sudo nixos-rebuild switch
• add config to dotfiles: [DannyDannyDanny/dotfiles/.../nixos/configuration.nix]

Nope to NixOS (for Now)

I'm not yet convinced by NixOS to point that I'd switch python environment management from Poetry / Pyenv to Nix.

For now I'm putting NixOs on the shelf. That being said, Nix package management is great and the repositories are impressively extensive. Maybe I'll return in a couple years once Homemanager and Flakes are less experimental and hopefully plain and friendly.

Back to Debian for now :)

Most people actually recommend poetry2nix as a dependency for any Python project on Nix, but NixOS is definitely a massive change

The issue I'm having is acknowledged in the NixOS wiki on python in section Running compiled libraries.

This means that the library use compiled dynamically linked binaries that your NixOs environment fail to resolve.

poetry2nix also fails to resolve the paths to these binaries. The NixOS wiki suggests several workarounds (fix-python, buildFHSUserEnv and nix-ld) which I just might look into 👀

Looking into fix-python, I see the following:

nix-command and flakes experimental features must be enabled

I'll be back once these feature are stable (or at least much less experimental).

Okay, I've got tmux (more or less) configured. I'm going to continue trying NixOS ✊🏻

For now, refining tmux config to look something more like: srid/nixos-config/blob/master/home/tmux.nix
