Summary

  • scripts/review_extract.py (new): standalone Python extractor for /review-verify. Fixes three §7 false-positive patterns that were baked into the old inline extraction script:
    • List-item PLACEMENT FP — strips HTML tags from pre_text before placement check; treats empty pre-context as placement-OK (span is the entire <li> content)
    • Bold-text PLACEMENT FP — strips HTML tags from the display label before comparing against pre-context (<strong>label</strong> was being searched as raw HTML in plain text)
    • Smart-quote NOT_SUBSTRING FP — normalises curly/smart quotes (\u201c–\u2019) to ASCII in both anchor and full-phrase before substring check
  • src/client/DeepCitation.ts: prepareUrl() now throws ValidationError when the server returns HTTP 200 with status: "error" in the response body — a silent failure gap where response.ok was true but the attachment was poisoned
  • src/react/dateUtils.ts: date-only strings (YYYY-MM-DD) are now parsed as local noon (T12:00:00) instead of UTC midnight, preventing off-by-one day display in UTC− timezones
  • src/react/Popover.tsx, src/react/evidence/EvidenceKeyhole.tsx: comment-only clarifications (host-app-agnostic wording, inline crop formula)
  • docs/agents/deep-citation-standards.md: marks three §7 known-FP entries as fixed with test references

Test plan

  • bun run test — 2287 tests pass (includes new prepareUrl-url-failures suite and §7 markdownToHtml regressions)
  • python3 -m pytest scripts/tests/test_review_extract.py -v — 14 tests pass across TestListItemPlacementFP, TestBoldTextPlacementFP, TestSmartQuoteNotSubstringFP, TestUnchangedBehavior
  • Verify prepareUrl() throws ValidationError for HTTP 200 + status:"error" body (Group C tests in prepareUrl-url-failures.test.ts)
  • Verify date display is correct for YYYY-MM-DD inputs in a UTC−N timezone (date should not roll back one day)

YYYY-MM-DD strings are parsed as UTC midnight per ECMAScript spec, causing
them to display as the previous calendar day in UTC- timezones.  Append
T12:00:00 (no Z, so local time) before parsing — the anchor stays within
the correct calendar day for any offset from UTC-12 to UTC+12.

Test: adjust the "1970-01-01" case to use T12:00:00 so it passes in all
timezones without changing what the test actually verifies.

Some backend error paths return HTTP 200 with status:"error" in the JSON body
rather than a non-2xx status code.  The previous code only checked response.ok
and would silently continue with a poisoned UploadFileResponse.

Now we inspect result.status after JSON parsing and throw ValidationError with
the server-supplied message (fallback: "URL processing failed") so callers
receive a catchable, descriptive error instead of silent data corruption.

Tests: new prepareUrl-url-failures.test.ts covers all 14 backend error scenarios
(Group A 400s, Group B 503s) and the silent-gap case (Group C HTTP 200 +
status:error).

Adds two structural regression tests that document the exact HTML patterns
which triggered false PLACEMENT flags in review_extract.py:

- Pattern 3 (list-item): span as sole <li> content → extractor pre_text strips
  to "" → empty-pre guard must suppress PLACEMENT flag.
- Pattern 4 (bold-text): span inner = <strong>label</strong> → extractor must
  strip HTML before placement check.

If markdownToHtml ever changes the HTML shape for these patterns, review_extract.py
must be updated to match.

Addresses §7 known false positives in the review-verify grading script:

Pattern 3 — List-item PLACEMENT: strip HTML tags from pre_text before the

Pattern 4 — Bold-text PLACEMENT: strip HTML tags from the display label
(inner may be <strong>label</strong>) before comparing against pre_text.

Smart-quote NOT_SUBSTRING: normalise curly/smart quotes (U+201C–201D, U+2018–
U+2019) to ASCII in both the anchor and source text before substring check.

Also adds scripts/tests/test_review_extract.py with named regression classes
(TestListItemPlacementFP, TestBoldTextPlacementFP, TestSmartQuoteFP) so any
future refactor of the extraction logic is caught by automated tests.

List-item PLACEMENT, bold-text PLACEMENT, and smart-quote NOT_SUBSTRING were
listed as known structural false positives.  All three are now fixed in
review_extract.py (Apr 2026) with regression tests.  Update the entries to
show the fix status and link to the test class names so reviewers know not
to reopen these issues.

uses { error: { message } } (HTTP-layer error path) while Group C uses
{ error: "string" } (application-layer status:error body) — the two shapes
test different code paths, not an inconsistency.

markdownToHtml.test.ts: expand §7 section comment to distinguish structural
tests here (HTML shape contract between markdownToHtml and review_extract.py)
from functional tests in scripts/tests/test_review_extract.py.

review_extract.py:
- Move `import os` from inside main() to module-level imports (conventional placement)
- Fix resource leak: `open(out, "w")` passed directly to json.dump() was never closed;
  replace with `with open(out, "w") as f:` context manager
- Use `os.path.splitext(basename)[0]` instead of `.replace(".html", "")` to correctly
  strip only the trailing extension regardless of filename content

test_review_extract.py:
- Add descriptive message to bare `assert len(results) == 1` so failures show
  the actual results list rather than a generic AssertionError

Overall this is a solid, well-motivated PR. The three §7 false-positive fixes are clearly reasoned, the tests are exemplary (each test documents why it exists), and the prepareUrl silent-failure fix addresses a real gap. A few issues worth addressing before merge:

Bug: .pyc bytecode file committed

scripts/tests/__pycache__/test_review_extract.cpython-310-pytest-9.0.3.pyc is a binary compile artifact and should not be in version control. Add scripts/tests/__pycache__/ (or a top-level **/__pycache__/) to .gitignore and remove this file from the PR.

reviewUrl() has the same silent-200 gap that prepareUrl was just fixed for

prepareUrl was patched to detect { status: "error" } inside an HTTP 200 body. The new reviewUrl() method makes the same shape of request and reads the response the same way, but has no equivalent guard:

If the /reviewUrl endpoint can return the same { status: "error", error: "..." } shape (likely, given that it calls out to external URLs), callers will silently receive a malformed ReviewUrlResponse. Either add the same guard or document why /reviewUrl is guaranteed never to use that pattern.

Unclosed file handle in main()

CPython's GC will close it eventually, but this is a resource-leak in PyPy or any long-running embedder, and static analysers (ruff, pylint) will flag it.

parse_cit_data fallback regex is dangerously greedy

.*\} with DOTALL will match from the first hex-keyed opening brace to the last } in the entire script content. If the script block contains anything after the citation object (a comment, a trailing assignment, another JSON literal), this will over-match and produce invalid JSON. Consider using a non-greedy .*? and anchoring more tightly, or just let the outer json.loads raise and surface the error rather than attempting a fragile recovery that could silently produce wrong data.

CLAUDE.md symlink → text file with @AGENTS.md

The original CLAUDE.md was a real filesystem symlink resolving to AGENTS.md. It is being replaced by a text file containing the single line @AGENTS.md. Some agent runtimes interpret @filename as an include directive, but tools that read files literally (editors, cat, grep, anything that doesn't implement the @-include protocol) will now see @AGENTS.md instead of the actual content. Please confirm this change is intentional and supported by all tooling in the repo's CI/dev workflow.

ReviewUrlOptions/ReviewUrlResponse bypass src/client/index.ts

The types are re-exported from src/index.ts by importing directly from src/client/reviewUrl.types.ts, rather than going through src/client/index.ts first:

result.error is accessed in the new prepareUrl guard but it is not visible in the diff whether error is declared on the UploadFileResponse type. If it is not, TypeScript will either error or silently widen the type to any. Worth a quick check that the type definition matches the runtime shape.

Thanks for the thorough review. All issues addressed in 684c683:

  • .pyc committed — removed via git rm --cached, added **/__pycache__/ + **/*.pyc to .gitignore
  • reviewUrl() silent-200 gap — added the same status === "error" guard as prepareUrl, throwing ValidationError with the body's error message
  • Unclosed file handle — fixed with with open(...) as f: context manager
  • Greedy fallback regex — changed .*\} to .*?\} (non-greedy) to stop at the first closing brace rather than the last
  • ReviewUrlOptions/ReviewUrlResponse export path — added to src/client/index.ts and consolidated the re-export in src/index.ts to use ./client/index.js like everything else
  • UploadFileResponse.error — already typed (error?: string at src/client/types.ts:171); no change needed

Re: CLAUDE.md → @AGENTS.md — intentional. The original CLAUDE.md was a git symlink (mode 120000) which caused claude-code-action to fail with ENOENT: no such file or directory, symlink when it tried to restore the file from origin/main via Node.js fs.symlink(). Converting to a regular file with @AGENTS.md uses Claude Code's native @filename import directive — Claude Code resolves and inlines the referenced file's content. Tools that read the file literally (cat, grep) will see @AGENTS.md, which is the intended fallback behavior for non-Claude tooling.
