Summary

  • Move getCitationStatus + PARTIAL_STATUSES from src/parsing/parseCitation.ts to src/utils/citationStatus.ts — parsing concerns should not own status-derivation logic consumed by UI, CDN runtime, and utilities. Updated all import sites and the public src/index.ts exports.
  • Export new public symbols from src/index.ts: SDK_VERSION, CITATION_DATA_START_DELIMITER, CITATION_DATA_END_DELIMITER, and the relocated getCitationStatus/PARTIAL_STATUSES.
  • Extract useDrawerNavigation hook from OpenCitationDrawer — collapses ~100 lines of interleaved accordion/header-inline/full-page state, refs, and callbacks into a focused custom hook. Removes onSubstateChange from DrawerEscapeCtx (escape logic now lives in the hook).
  • Replace buildIntentSummary with analyzeVerification in CitationDrawer and DefaultPopoverContent — consistent with the preferred analysis API.
  • Simplify useDrawerNavigation public API: expose toggleActiveIndicator(key) instead of raw setActiveIndicatorKey, encapsulating the toggle logic and shrinking handleIndicatorClick's dependency array. Escape handler calls closeInlineRef.current() instead of duplicating the triple-reset inline.
  • Remove no-op escCtxValue useMemo — navCtxValue is already memoized in the hook; the wrapper added no value.
  • CDN simplifications: spread operators replace verbose field-by-field copies in cdn-mappers.ts (safe — VerificationData sub-objects use Pick<> types); status color CSS strings now reference constants from react/constants.ts instead of duplicating hardcoded hex values.
  • Update docs/agents/canonical-exports.md to reflect the getCitationStatus move and add analyzeVerification entry.

Test plan

  • bun run lint passes (biome CI clean)
  • bun test passes with no regressions beyond pre-existing baseline (129 failures on main)
  • Open a citation drawer, expand an accordion item, then press Escape — should collapse accordion, not close drawer
  • Press Escape again — should close the drawer
  • Open a page image in the header panel, press Escape — should close header panel, not accordion
  • Click a header indicator icon — should toggle overlay highlight only when header panel is open
  • Verify CDN popover status colors still render correctly (verified/partial/miss/pending indicators)

refactor: simplify drawer navigation hook and context wiring

- Encapsulate activeIndicatorKey toggle into toggleActiveIndicator() hook method,
  removing the raw setter from the public API and shrinking handleIndicatorClick deps
- Remove escCtxValue no-op useMemo; pass navCtxValue directly to context provider

Overall this is a clean, well-motivated refactor. The module boundary fix (getCitationStatus in utils/ instead of parsing/) and the hook extraction both improve cohesion. A few items worth addressing before merging:

Bugs / correctness

handleIndicatorClick — stale closure regression (CitationDrawer.tsx)

The old code used functional updaters to avoid stale closure:

handleIndicatorClick is now recreated on every accordion open/close, which means every rendered indicator button receives a new prop reference each time a different accordion row is expanded. This likely causes unnecessary re-renders of CitationIndicatorRow. Consider having onItemExpand accept a functional updater (or expose a dedicated toggleItem(key) from the hook) so the dependency on expandedCitationKey can be dropped.

analyzeVerification(verification) without null-coalescing (DefaultPopoverContent.tsx)

In CitationDrawer.tsx the call correctly coalesces: analyzeVerification(verification ?? null). In DefaultPopoverContent.tsx it passes verification directly:

analyzeVerification(verification).intent

If analyzeVerification does not handle undefined (only null), this will throw when verification is undefined. Worth making explicit or aligning with the CitationDrawer call pattern.

Design concerns

CDN spread operators passing extra runtime fields (cdn-mappers.ts)

TypeScript's Pick<> types enforce correctness at compile time, but if the CDN API evolves and the server sends extra fields (e.g. a future rawResponse on evidence), those fields will silently pass through into the Verification object consumed by UI and utilities. The explicit field selection was a deliberate guard. At minimum, add a comment explaining why spread is safe here so future authors don't need to re-derive it.

handlePageDeactivate is a no-op wrapper (useDrawerNavigation.ts:677–679)

Since closeInline is already stable (empty deps), handlePageDeactivate is identical to closeInline. The hook could return closeInline as handlePageDeactivate (or simply not re-export it under a different name), removing the unnecessary indirection.

Missing test coverage

useDrawerNavigation encapsulates multi-level escape navigation, ref synchronization, and document event listener cleanup — all the logic that previously had to be traced across OpenCitationDrawer. This is the right call architecturally, but there are no tests for the new hook. The escape key sequence in particular (Level 3 → 2 → 1 → closed) is exactly the kind of stateful transition that breaks silently. A small suite of hook tests (using @testing-library/react-hooks or similar) would lock in the intended behavior.

Nits

  • SDK_VERSION export placement (index.ts:58): The export appears before the // Client errors comment block but is logically a client symbol. Consider grouping it with the client section or adding a brief comment.
  • Test plan uses bun: The PR test plan references bun run lint / bun test, but AGENTS.md specifies npm test / npm run test:ct. Minor but worth keeping consistent.
  • onSubstateChange removal: Dropping the Set<string>-based substate tracking in favour of the single expandedKeyRef is correct since only one accordion item is ever open at a time. Good simplification — just noting it in case it comes up in review.

What's working well

  • The getCitationStatus + PARTIAL_STATUSES move is exactly right — this is verification-layer logic, not parsing logic, and the new location makes that clear.
  • Registering the escape listener once with refs for state reads is the correct pattern; the previous useLayoutEffect-synced ref dance is preserved faithfully in the hook.
  • toggleActiveIndicator as an encapsulated toggle instead of exposing raw setActiveIndicatorKey shrinks handleIndicatorClick's public surface area — good API design.
  • CDN color constants referencing react/constants.ts eliminates the dual-maintenance problem for hex values.
