Transcribe audio file

I would love to transscribe voice messages from the Signal App. Signal downloads them to the folder Music/Signal.
In the DictateKeyboard app, I would love to see that folder, tap an audio file and have it transcribed.

Good news: this already exists, and has since v4.0.0 — it is just not where you would look for it,
which is fair enough.

Long-press the microphone button in the keyboard's action row (or in the classic dictation
layout) while it is idle. The system file picker opens, filtered to audio and video, and you can
navigate anywhere from there — Music/Signal included. Tap the voice message, come back to your
chat, and the transcription starts as soon as the keyboard is showing again; the text is inserted at
the cursor like any dictation.

A few things worth knowing:

• Video files work too, not only audio — the same picker takes both.
• The size limit follows your provider: 25 MB on OpenAI, Groq and Dictate Cloud, 15 MB on Gemini,
  50 MB on SiliconFlow, and gigabytes on Deepgram, AssemblyAI and ElevenLabs. Long recordings are
  compressed before upload, so a voice message is nowhere near any of those ceilings.
• The result lands in the transcription history as well, so you can copy it again later without
  transcribing twice.

What your idea asks for beyond that, and what genuinely is not there: a folder view inside the
Dictate app, and an entry in Android's share sheet. Today the route is the system picker from the
keyboard, so sharing a voice message straight out of Signal into Dictate is not possible. If that
share-sheet route is the part you actually care about — it would save you the detour through the file
manager — it is worth its own feature request, and it would be a much smaller change than a file
browser in the app.

Give the long-press a try first, though; for the Signal case it may already be exactly what you
wanted.
