Right Clock and Notification

Important Note: This is a strictly required companion extension designed to work alongside Active App Tabs. It must be installed and enabled together with Active App Tabs for the workspace layout to function correctly.

Overview

Right Clock and Notification optimizes the GNOME Shell top panel geometry by shifting system components to the right edge. It frees up valuable central screen real estate to accommodate application tab bars smoothly.

Fitts's Law Implementation & Layout Logic

This extension leverages Fitts's Law principles to enhance desktop workflow efficiency:

  • Clearing the Center: By relocating the default center clock and notification stack to the far right perimeter, the primary center region of the top panel becomes completely unobstructed.
  • Predictable Targeting Zones: Moving notifications and clock interaction points to the screen corners/edges reduces cognitive load and mouse-movement precision requirements, allowing faster, more natural target acquisition.
  • Harmonized Geometry: Working in tandem with Active App Tabs, it ensures that application elements and system indicators do not overlap, providing a clean, balanced desktop environment.
