Cloudify plugins extend Cloudify's orchestration functionality to other tools and applications.

Just as Cloudify can be used to control your cloud platform (such as AWS, SoftLayer, Openstack, etc), it can be used to control your infrastructure. You can build plugins to integrate Cloudify with your monitoring, configuration management, and application deployment.

Before writing a plugin, it helps to understand where the plugin "fits in" in the Cloudify architecture.

Cloudify basically is can be understood this way:

  • Blueprints describe your cloud architecture. They are written in yaml.
  • Deployments are copies of blueprints, that contain the base files for nodes before runtime.
  • The workflow engines are spawned when a deployment is executed.

Plugins are essentially scripts that the workflow agents run on deployment execution. However, they make use of data generated in the blueprint, the deployment and at runtime. So you have a lot of power in using Cloudify's various stages to build really cool plugins.
