Active Proxy Protocol (Complete Rewrite)

The Boson Active Proxy — the relay system that makes home nodes reachable without opening router ports — was completely rewritten from scratch. 11 consecutive debugging sessions traced the wire protocol from broken to working:

• Switch to plain protocol and fix allocated port registration (0305d8b7)
• Revert to encrypted protocol, fix port registration and NAT handling (45f11b11)
• Reduce keepalive interval to 10s, send immediate PING after auth (c6a4df60)
• Correct packet format to match Java server protocol (dce0761a)
• Prevent infinite loop in packet processing — stale buffer reference (b385c79e)
• Add missing packet type handlers + raw byte logging for debugging (ddfc0f6d)
• Correct packet type mapping and encryption format based on wire evidence (e27aea95)
• Try 4 key combinations for decryption to find correct shared key (19717316)
• Try all nonce+key combinations for decryption (9f5c16a6)
• Rewrite protocol from decompiled Java server source (5989ca1e)

Gateway & Connectivity

• Send domain in AUTH for virtual host registration + early socket buffering (84563dd8)
• Register proxy endpoint by handling connected event before connect() (5dbe7e64)
• Fix: don't send domain in AUTH — server helper crashes the connection (bf3cf033)
• Gateway uses plain HTTP proxy for ActiveProxy relay endpoints (8514f466)
• Chunk sendData to prevent RangeError on large relay payloads (91ec216b)

Summary

This week was focused on getting the relay protocol working correctly from first principles. The Active Proxy is the safety net that ensures every home node is reachable regardless of router configuration. 18 commits of wire-level protocol debugging — each one informed by real packet analysis — took it from broken to production-ready.
