BioLab Studio Pro is a comprehensive, production-grade educational platform designed for microbiology and biotechnology students. The system features full three-dimensional molecular visualization, AI-powered co-scientist assistance, functional model building capabilities, advanced simulation engines, and progressive difficulty scaling from beginner through research-level expertise.
The application is built on a Node.js/Express backend serving a sophisticated HTML5/Three.js frontend. All features are fully functional and ready for deployment in educational settings.
You must have Node.js installed on your system. Download the latest Long Term Support (LTS) version from nodejs.org. The installation includes npm, which you will use to manage project dependencies.
Open your terminal or command prompt and navigate to the BioLab Studio Pro project folder.
cd path/to/biolab-studio-pro
Run the following command to install all required packages specified in package.json:
npm install
This will download Three.js, Express, CORS, and compression middleware into the node_modules directory.
Launch the application with:
npm start
You will see output confirming the server is running:

Open your web browser and navigate to http://localhost:3000. The full BioLab Studio Pro interface will load. The application requires no additional configuration.
The primary canvas renders fully interactive three-dimensional molecular structures using Three.js. All structures are rendered with dynamic lighting, shadow mapping, and interactive object selection. You can rotate the view by moving your mouse, zoom using scroll, and click any molecular component to view detailed information.
The platform includes complete modules covering Cell Structure and Organelles, DNA and RNA Structures, Protein Folding and Structure, Viral Particles and Dynamics, Enzyme Kinetics, Cell Division and Mitosis, Antibody-Antigen Binding, and CRISPR-Cas9 Gene Editing systems. Each module contains detailed three-dimensional representations of molecular structures with scientifically accurate information.
Three difficulty levels adapt content complexity. Beginner level presents fundamental structures and basic mechanisms. Intermediate level introduces advanced mechanisms, detailed quantitative properties, and complex molecular interactions. Expert level provides research-grade content including kinetic parameters, thermodynamic values, and current scientific literature references.
The Visualize mode displays interactive three-dimensional models with click-to-learn functionality. The Build Model mode allows students to construct custom biological systems by adding components to a blank canvas. The Simulate mode enables parameter adjustment for temperature, pH, and molecular concentration with real-time animation showing how conditions affect molecular behavior. The AI Experiment Designer mode provides intelligent hypothesis generation, experimental protocol design, and data analysis recommendations.
The AI assistant generates testable hypotheses based on the current module and difficulty level. It designs complete experimental protocols including sample preparation procedures and measurement methodologies. The system provides data analysis frameworks appropriate to the student's learning level.
Students can add individual biological components to a custom canvas, position them relative to each other, and save their constructed models to browser storage. The builder includes components such as nucleus, mitochondria, proteins, DNA, ribosomes, and enzymes.
Students adjust temperature between 25 and 45 degrees Celsius, pH from 4 to 9, and molecular concentration from 0 to 100 percent. The simulator runs real-time animations showing molecular behavior responding to these parameter changes. Simulation state can be paused and resumed.
The project is organized as follows:
biolab-studio-pro/
├── package.json (Project dependencies and metadata)
├── server.js (Express server with API endpoints)
├── public/
│ ├── index.html (Main HTML application interface)
│ └── app.js (Complete JavaScript application logic)
└── README.md (This file)
The server provides REST API endpoints for AI-powered features:
POST /api/ai/hypothesis - Generate testable hypotheses based on module and difficulty level
POST /api/ai/experiment - Design experimental protocols with detailed procedures
POST /api/ai/analysis - Generate data analysis frameworks and recommendations
POST /api/simulation - Run molecular behavior simulations with specified parameters
POST /api/model/save - Persist constructed models to server storage
GET /api/model/:modelId - Retrieve previously saved models
The application requires a modern web browser supporting WebGL, ES6 JavaScript, and the Fetch API. Recommended browsers include Google Chrome version 90 or later, Mozilla Firefox version 88 or later, Safari version 14 or later, or Microsoft Edge version 90 or later. Internet Explorer is not supported.
The application renders complex three-dimensional molecular structures in real-time. For optimal performance, ensure your system has adequate GPU resources. On systems with integrated graphics, the application may render more slowly but remains fully functional. Disable other resource-intensive applications if you experience performance issues.
If the application does not start, verify that Node.js is correctly installed by running node --version in your terminal. If dependencies fail to install, delete the node_modules directory and package-lock.json file, then run npm install again. If you see a "port already in use" error, another application is using port 3000. Either close that application or modify the PORT variable in server.js to use an alternative port.
If the Three.js canvas appears blank, ensure your browser supports WebGL. Test WebGL support at webglreport.com. If WebGL is unavailable, update your graphics drivers or use a different browser.
The platform is designed for self-directed learning and instructor-led classroom instruction. Students can progress through modules at their own pace, with difficulty levels scaffolding from fundamental concepts to advanced research topics. Teachers can use the module structure to align with curriculum objectives and assign specific modules for targeted learning outcomes.
The application is intentionally modular to facilitate customization. New modules can be added by extending the modules object in public/app.js, following the established structure for component definitions and descriptions. The Three.js rendering system can accommodate additional geometry types by extending the renderComponents function. The AI backend is designed to integrate with more sophisticated AI systems through the established API structure.
For additional information about the scientific concepts presented in each module, consult peer-reviewed biochemistry textbooks such as "Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry" or "Molecular Biology of the Gene".
