The pronunciation isn't age, as in the temporal sense. It's like aghé. The pronunciation and reasoning for the name were mentioned on the spec and README but now are lost to history. This is the best historical reference I can find: |

As far as I can tell there is no time component to the program. The man page mentions a flag to refuse old ciphertexts, but that seems like a niche use case.
In discussions there's only discussion on pronouncing, but the meaning was never revealed
