Windows

  • A click on the subtitles always plays or pauses. A click made with the mouse still moving (as when reaching for the player while another window is in front) was sometimes taken for the start of a window drag, and did nothing; a second quick click was then ignored too. Now a drag is the button held a moment and the mouse moved, and a quick click always counts.

Android

  • The screen is the subtitles'. The book's cover, title and author are one small row at the top of the player; the subtitles have all the room down to the seek bar.
  • Subtitles size. The player's ⋮ menu has Subtitles size…: a slider, A− and A+, a preview, and Standard size. The size is kept for every book. A sentence too long for it is shown in the largest smaller size in which it fits.

Updating the phone: update the PC first; the phone's library then offers Tap to update to aBookPlayer 1.12.3 from that PC.

Changes

  • A book in text opens the audiobook window from anywhere. An EPUB, a PDF or a text file opens Create an audiobook from a text with the book already read when it is:
    • dropped on the player's window (as before);
    • dropped on the audiobook window itself, where it takes the place of the book that was there;
    • dropped on the app's icon or opened with Open with → aBookPlayer, also while aBookPlayer is already running.

The Android app has no changes besides the version number.

Faster audiobooks from a text

  • Several sentences at a time. On the processor up to four sentences are spoken at once (about twice as fast as before). On the graphics card the app adds copies of the voice as long as each one makes it clearly faster. The first line of the log says what was chosen and how fast it is, for example On the graphics card, 3 sentences at a time: 31× real time (the processor: 14×).
  • CUDA for NVIDIA cards, as an option. With an NVIDIA card the window shows NVIDIA card: use CUDA instead of DirectML. CUDA is downloaded on demand (1.5 GB, 2.2 GB on the disk): ONNX Runtime for CUDA from nuget.org, CUDA 12 and cuDNN 9 from NVIDIA's own server, under NVIDIA's license. It needs an NVIDIA driver of 2025 or later; with an older one the log says so and the processor is used.

CUDA for the transcription too

  • With an NVIDIA card the transcription window shows NVIDIA card: use CUDA instead of Vulkan. Whisper's CUDA library (250 MB) and NVIDIA's CUDA libraries are downloaded on demand.
  • NVIDIA's libraries are shared by the transcription and by the voices: what one has downloaded, the other does not download again (766 MB for the transcription alone, 1.5 GB for the voices alone, about 1.75 GB for both).

Switching between CUDA and DirectML or Vulkan takes effect the next time aBookPlayer is opened, if the speech engine or Whisper was already in use.

CUDA could not be tried on an NVIDIA card before this release: if something does not work, untick the box and it goes on as before.

The Android app has no changes besides the version number.

Audiobooks from a text

File → Create an audiobook from a text… (or drop an .epub, a .pdf, a .txt or an .md on the window) turns a book in English into an audiobook, spoken on the PC by a neural voice.

  • Two engines, your choice: Kokoro, the most natural voices (21 of them, American and British), or Piper, lighter and much faster (14 voices). Pick the speed and press Listen to hear a sample first.
  • Graphics card or processor: the voices run on any graphics card (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel) through DirectML, or on the processor. The app times both before starting and uses the faster.
  • The book: chapters come from the EPUB's table of contents, from the PDF's bookmarks or from the titles in the text. In a PDF, running headers, page numbers and end-of-line hyphens are removed and paragraphs are put back together across pages. Covers, contents, copyright pages and licenses are listed but not ticked.
  • The result: a folder Author - Title with one MP3 per chapter, the cover and an .srt with every sentence at the moment it is spoken. It opens like any other book, with chapters, cover and subtitles, on the PC and on the phone.
  • A narration stopped halfway goes on from the chapter it was at.

Downloaded once, on demand: the speech engine (about 43 MB), then Kokoro (325 MB for all its voices) or a Piper voice (60–120 MB each). After that everything works offline.

Not supported: PDFs made of scanned pages, pages set in two columns, EPUBs protected by DRM.

The Android app has no changes besides the version number.

Changes

  • One click to play or pause, even when the window is not in front: a click on the subtitle area of a window behind another one now brings it forward and plays or pauses at once. Before, that first click only brought the window forward and a second one was needed. Dragging the area still moves the window.

The Android app has no changes besides the version number.

Fixes

  • Menus on high-DPI screens: the menu bar, its drop-down menus and the context menus now take their size from the monitor the window is on. On some setups (a 4K screen at 175%, a second monitor with another scale, a scale changed without signing out, a remote desktop) their items could stay very small. They now also follow the window when it moves to a monitor with another scale, and are as large as the rest of the app's text.

The Android app has no changes besides the version number.

GitHub account moved

The GitHub account moved from MarcoTrombetta to FirekeeperPhate: aBookPlayer now lives at https://github.com/FirekeeperPhate/aBookPlayer. The update check (Help menu and the daily check), the download link on the phone's connect page and the README now point there, so updates come from FirekeeperPhate/aBookPlayer. Please update: earlier versions still look for updates under the old account name.

Android

  • A long subtitle sentence is shown in smaller letters, so it no longer overflows the room between the chapter and the seek bar on small screens.
  • The library's search and filters are hidden while the first-run prompts are shown (access to the files, choosing a folder).

Updating the phone: with aBookPlayer 1.11.3 or later on the phone, update the PC first. The phone's library then offers Tap to update to aBookPlayer 1.11.5 from that PC.

Android

  • Chapters panel. The chapters slide in from the right: swipe from right to left, tap Chapter x of y in the middle of the player, or tap Chapters. The chapter being played is shown in blue. Tap a chapter to go there; swipe right or tap beside the panel to close it.
  • Back to the library with a swipe. Swipe right on the player to return to the library.
  • Search and filters in the library, as in the Windows app:
    • Search by title, author or series.
    • Show all books, those in progress, not started or finished.
    • List them by recent listening, by author or by series. Author and series headers close and open with a tap.
  • Speed panel. The speed button opens a panel with preset speeds, a slider from 0.5× to 2.5× in steps of 0.05, and − / + buttons, instead of cycling through speeds. The button turns blue when the speed is not 1×.
  • A book just finished now shows as finished when you return to the library.

Updating the phone: with aBookPlayer 1.11.3 on the phone, update the PC first. The phone's library then offers Tap to update to aBookPlayer 1.11.4 from that PC.

New

  • Android: updates from the PC. When a connected PC runs a newer version, the phone's library shows Tap to update to aBookPlayer x.y.z from MYPC. The app is downloaded from the PC and installed by Android (the first time, Android asks to allow aBookPlayer to install apps). This works from the next version on: install this one from the APK below, or from the QR code of a PC running 1.11.3.

Fixes

  • Long MP3 books on the phone:
    • The parts the PC serves are now cut in pauses, so there is no small gap in the audio every three minutes.
    • MP3s of constant bitrate are no longer cut: the phone already seeks in them exactly.
  • The phone's own long MP3s (a folder on the phone, or books copied with Download to this phone before 1.11.1) now play in exact parts too. The phone lands where the PC is, with the right length, even away from the PC.
  • Downloads interrupted while the PC was updated start over with the PC's new parts, instead of mixing old and new pieces.
  • Windows Firewall:
    • The check in the share window looks at each network separately. A block on another network (a VPN, Hyper-V) is no longer reported as blocking phones on the home network.
    • It also checks the phones' search for the PC (UDP), not only the connection.
    • The installer no longer removes existing rules: an access refused in Windows' own question stays refused.

New

  • Install the Android app from the PC's code: the QR code in File → Share with your phone now also installs aBookPlayer on a phone that does not have it yet. Scan it with the phone's camera and tap Open aBookPlayer: with the app installed it opens connected to the PC, as before; without it, the app is downloaded from the PC (then open the downloaded file to install it). The page also has a Download the app link.
    • The PC downloads the APK of its own version from GitHub in the background while sharing is on, so the phone always gets a matching app. Until it has it (for example with no internet), the page links to this release on GitHub.
    • The browser may warn that the download is not secure (the PC's local address is plain HTTP): choose to keep it. The first time, Android asks to allow installing apps from the browser.

The Android app has no changes besides the version number.
