Desktop [Graphics Card Support Feature Request] #122

@Lukew4lker

Description

@Lukew4lker

This request proposes adding or improving firmware support for a broader range of discrete GPUs on the Framework Desktop. While community testing has revealed that several GPUs can operate with workarounds, consistent initialization, power delivery, and firmware-level compatibility remain partially unsupported.

Background

Following up on Issue #122 , I conducted structured testing across multiple GPUs to document current behavior and assist future validation efforts.
The goal is not to report individual test results, but to highlight patterns that could inform future firmware updates and compatibility guidance.

Test Scope

Operating System: Windows 11

Focus: Boot reliability, power behavior, and driver initialization, Performance stability.

Hardware Tested:

Intel Arc Pro B50

NVIDIA RTX 5080 Founders Edition

AMD Radeon RX 580
(Additional RDNA3 cards were also evaluated but not retained for long-term testing.)

Request

Please evaluate and, if feasible, expand firmware support or validation coverage for graphics cards connected to PCIe and USB4. In particular, address initialization and compatibility conditions uncovered during testing to ensure a smoother user experience out-of-the-box.

Notes

Testing was community driven based on a request to support off the shelf graphics adapters. Irregularities or environmental variation may exist. Effort was made to minimize confounding variables and ensure reproducibility

During testing, the EC UART connection proved indispensable and I have no doubt it will continue to be useful into the future.
