After some discussion in meta-dev, I agreed that this forms a more interesting mechanic than the current one (hitting something with a riding crop). Very simple, now instead of that any mobs that are bred in the nether (or probably just shoving baby mobs through the gate, but I don't think that can be differentiated in 1.7.10) will drop a shard 1/3 of the time.
Tested in dev env with sheep.
