New in 1.9.2
- Far fewer stutters while playing together. The game used to freeze for a moment every few seconds, and for seconds at a time now and then. That was the mod's own housekeeping, not the connection:
- a check that searched every object in the game for things that can't be shared at all;
- the calendar, the staff book and the store's screen machines re-reading their state ten times a second, even with nothing new and nobody to send it to;
- the paint of every wall and piece of furniture read every 2 seconds. It's now read only after something is painted or placed.
- the replication check doing a quarter of the store at once. It now does a little at a time.
- Measured on two copies of the game with a simulated 150 ms internet connection: the longest pauses went from several seconds to about a tenth of a second.
Still to do: a few smaller pauses remain (a guest applying the store's paint, customers, other players' bodies).
Host and guests need the same version, so update together.
Everything from 1.9.1 is included - see 1.9.1.
Checked
- 542 checks of the mod's Lua.
- Two copies of the game on one PC, the guest through a simulated internet connection (150 ms, 2% loss): frame times and each part of the mod timed on both, before and after.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT).
Rewind Together 1.9.1
Co-op for Retro Rewind. Download RewindTogether-1.9.1.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt inside the zip walks host and guest through it.
Already on 1.7.1 or later? Press Update on the launcher's green banner. On 1.7.0? Download this zip by hand once and unzip it over your old folder.
New in 1.9.1
- Guests can rent out consoles to customers. A guest who talked to a customer asking for help (renting a console, a movie...) used to open the conversation on the host's screen. It now opens on the guest's screen and the request is the guest's: accept, hand the console over into the customer's case with a click, and take the money.
- Guests see the customer's console case on the counter, opening and shutting as it does for the host.
- Fixed: other players sank into the floor when they crouched (and hung in the air after standing up). Their body now kneels with its feet on the floor, and bends its knees in the air when they jump.
- Fixed: another player carrying several movies showed the ones in their left hand inside each other.
Host and guests need the same version, so update together.
Everything from 1.9.0 is included - see 1.9.0.
Checked
- 540 checks of the mod's Lua.
- Played on two copies of the game on one PC, host and guest:
- Console rental: the customer's question on the guest's screen, the guest's "Sure!", the guest's click handing the console over (it went into the customer's case, which shut on both screens), and the guest's click on the money paying the store.
- Crouching: the other player's body kneels with its feet on the floor, and stands back up on its normal animation.
- Not tried live yet: a guest taking a returned console out of the customer's case, the jump pose's timing after its last change, and how several movies now sit in the other player's hand.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT).
Rewind Together 1.9.0
Co-op for Retro Rewind. Download RewindTogether-1.9.0.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt inside the zip walks host and guest through it.
Already on 1.7.1 or later? Press Update on the launcher's green banner. On 1.7.0? Download this zip by hand once and unzip it over your old folder.
New in 1.9.0
- A character for every store. Each save keeps its own character, and so does each friend's store you join. The first time you're in a store, the character screen opens by itself on the character you made last, so DONE or CANCEL keeps it there. Change it any time from the pause menu (Character) or F4. Your 1.8.0 character carries over.
- Guests can use the staff book. Both pages show the host's applicants and employees on the game's own cards (photo, pay, skills, traits). Hire, let go and change an employee's job, exactly as the host's book would.
- Guests can claim the calendar's rewards. The guest's calendar shows the host's month, weather and the store's claimed rewards, and a Claim pays the store once, whoever claims it.
- Guests can use the repair desk. A broken tape now shows its broken sticker on every screen. The repair is played on the guest's own screen (screwdriver, screws, scissors), and the tape comes back mended for everyone, with the store's XP.
- Guests can use the console rental. Put a returned console on the mat, watch its scan on the monitor, take it back and put it on the shelf. The monitor, shelf lights and stickers match the host's.
- Fixed: a guest carrying something who clicked a screen machine (the repair desk, the catalogue...) lost what they were carrying on the host's screen.
- Probably fixed: guests could not hand a customer what they asked for (a console to rent, a movie, popcorn, a slushie, cotton candy). The game's hand-over spot only looked at the host's hands. Not tried live yet.
Host and guests need the same version, so update together.
Everything from 1.8.0 is included - see 1.8.0.
Checked
- 534 checks of the mod's Lua.
- Played on two copies of the game on one PC, host and guest:
- Per-store characters: the host's store and the guest's view of it share one store, and the first-time screen opened on both.
- Staff book: both pages, a job change, the level-20 refusal, letting an employee go (he walked out) and a hire (he walked in, on both screens).
- Calendar: the guest's page matched the host's, and a claim paid the store $100 and 50 XP once.
- Repair desk: a whole repair with real clicks on the guest's window, with the host's XP up by 2.
- Console rental: a console on the mat, its 40-second scan on the guest's monitor, taken back and shelved.
- Not tried live yet: handing a customer what they asked for as a guest, and how the guest's calendar updates when a new day starts.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT).
Rewind Together 1.8.0
Co-op for Retro Rewind. Download RewindTogether-1.8.0.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt inside the zip walks host and guest through it.
Already on 1.7.1 or later? Press Update on the launcher's green banner. On 1.7.0? Download this zip by hand once and unzip it over your old folder.
New in 1.8.0
- Choose your character. A character screen in the game's own style opens by itself the first time you play, and any time after from the pause menu (Character) or F4. Pick one of the store's 14 named regulars, or make your own from everything the town wears: body, skin, hair and its colour, beard, glasses, top, bottom and shoes with their colours, and height. RANDOM makes a new one, TURN shows the back. It's kept for every game, and everyone sees you that way.
- Guests can use the catalogue. Shelves, equipment and decorations show as far as the store's level allows, and Buy places the order with the host's own catalogue: the store's money, the box at the delivery spot. The counter stations (popcorn, slushie, cotton candy, repair desk, sidewalk sign, console rental) can be bought there too.
- Guests can use the store expansion map, pick the sidewalk sign's ad, rename the store on its sign, and see the store level board as it really is.
- Fixed: a guest stocking the snack shelves paid for each snack, and most never reached the shelf. Anything a guest did that the game checks "is there enough money?" for was told no after the money had already gone.
- Guests see and hear the phone ring, and see it answered.
- Other players no longer walk in little circles when they stand still. Their head follows where they look, and the body turns only when it has to.
- On the morning after a day, guests start outside beside the host, like the host does.
- Fixed: a guest clicking the repair desk, the sidewalk sign or the store's name sign could pull the host across the store.
- Also new since 1.7.5: guests can work the return desk, stock the snack shelves, and make popcorn, slushies and cotton candy (a real one ends up in their hands, in the right colour).
Host and guests need the same version, so update together.
Everything from 1.7.5 is included - see 1.7.5.
Checked
- 487 checks of the mod's Lua.
- Played on two copies of the game on one PC, host and guest: the character screen on both (first time, pause menu, F4, DONE, CANCEL, Escape, RANDOM, TURN, a regular), the other player's chosen look and height on the host; a guest's catalogue order and station purchase, sidewalk-sign ad, store rename, expansion map and level board; snack-shelf stocking and taking back; a whole sale at the till (three tapes, cash, change, closing the drawer); answering the phone.
- Not yet tried with a guest: the console rental (needs store level 21). The staff book, the calendar's rewards and the repair desk's minigame stay the host's for now.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT).
Rewind Together 1.7.5
Co-op for Retro Rewind. Download RewindTogether-1.7.5.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt inside the zip walks host and guest through it.
Already on 1.7.1 or later? Press Update on the launcher's green banner. On 1.7.0? Download this zip by hand once and unzip it over your old folder.
New in 1.7.5
- The register is quicker for guests. When a guest rang a customer up, the bill could show on their register's screen about two seconds after the scan. The host now sends the register's screen and the cash drawer to the guest within a tenth of a second of each press at the till.
- Fixed: quick clicks at the till could be lost. Clicking change out of the drawer quickly could drop a click on the host, so the guest's drawer ran ahead of the store's. Every click now counts.
Host and guests need the same version, so update together.
Everything from 1.7.4 is included (guests at the office computer, players that look and walk like people, steadier hosting) - see 1.7.4.
Checked
- 419 checks of the mod's Lua (2 new: a guest's press at the till sends the register's screen on the next tick; two clicks a tenth of a second apart are two presses).
- Found from a recording of a live session over the internet. The fix itself has not yet been played live.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT).
Rewind Together 1.7.4
Co-op for Retro Rewind. Download RewindTogether-1.7.4.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt inside the zip walks host and guest through it.
Already on 1.7.1 or later? Press Update on the launcher's green banner. On 1.7.0? Download this zip by hand once and unzip it over your old folder.
New in 1.7.4
- Guests can order at the office computer. The desktop, the second-hand market (movies and bundles, with their covers, ratings and prices) and the new releases now show on a guest's screen too, and Buy works: the store's money pays, and the tapes arrive at the delivery spot for everyone. Before, a guest saw placeholder text.
- The Black Market and the Data page work for guests too. Type a SKU on the Black Market page and the host's computer finds it, with its price and cover; Buy orders it like the host's own (a buy there can unlock a Steam achievement on the host's account, as the host's own would). The Data page lists every movie of a researched genre, the store's own copies first, with copies and times rented.
- A new release's free-standee picture shows on a guest's computer (movies; a video game's banner picture stays hidden).
- Players look like people. Every player is one of the town's characters - clothes, colours, hair, face - picked by the host and the same on every screen. No more bald bodies in plain default clothes ("broken shirts").
- Players walk when they walk, instead of standing idle while they move, and what they carry is in their hands.
- Fixed: the host could crash with two or more guests in the store. The mod looked things up in a way that walks every object in the game, several times a second; a walk that met something being removed took the game down. Lookups now go straight to the object, about a hundred times faster.
- Less memory creeps up over a long session: the mod's frequent lookups of game classes now leave a third of the memory behind (about 20 MB less per hour on every copy).
- Fixed: something a guest was holding when they left stayed floating in the air. It now drops to the floor.
- Fixed: thrown or dropped things hung in mid-air on guests' screens. They now land in the same place for everyone.
- Fixed: a guest's clicks on a machine's screen (the computer, the catalogue) were also sent to the host as clicks in the store.
Host and guests need the same version, so update together.
Checked
- Three copies of the game on one PC, through a simulated bad connection (300 ms, 5% packet loss): joining late, leaving and rejoining (the store is complete again in 10-19 s), three players at once. Every tape, shelf and number matched on all three screens.
- Each player's look, walk and carried tape, seen from the other two copies.
- A guest ordering with the mouse at the office computer; the host's money, the market and the delivered tape on every screen.
- The Black Market, the Data page and the standee picture for guests are the newest part of this build. They are covered by the mod's checks but have not been played live yet. If something looks off there, please report it.
- 417 checks of the mod's Lua (29 new) and 250 launcher tests.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT).
Rewind Together 1.7.3
Co-op for Retro Rewind. Download RewindTogether-1.7.3.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt inside the zip walks host and guest through it.
Already on 1.7.1 or 1.7.2? Press Update on the launcher's green banner. On 1.7.0? Download this zip by hand once and unzip it over your old folder.
New in 1.7.3
- Fixed: guests stranded outside the map. A guest who used the office computer was standing in the dark behind the store the moment they got off it, with no way back. The same happened with every machine: the catalogue, the return desk, the staff book, the calendar, the snack machines and more (18 in all). Leaving a machine walks you to its exit spot using the host's map data, which a guest's game doesn't have. The guest is now put on the machine's exit spot.
- Guests have a pause menu. Esc did nothing on a guest's screen; now it opens the game's own pause menu. "Return to menu" leaves the session.
- "Back to the store" in the pause menu, for anything else that strands somebody: a guest lands next to the host, the host by the register.
rt.unstuckin the console does the same.
The office computer's ordering pages still show placeholder text on a guest's screen; ordering is the host's job for now.
Host and guests need the same version, so update together.
Checked
- Live on two copies of the game: getting off the computer with W (the guest's game aimed at the middle of the world; the mod put them back at the computer), Esc opening and closing the guest's menu, and the new button for guest and host.
- 388 checks of the mod's Lua (15 new) and 250 launcher tests.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT).
Rewind Together 1.7.2
Co-op for Retro Rewind. Download RewindTogether-1.7.2.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt inside the zip walks host and guest through it.
Already on 1.7.1? Press Update on the launcher's green banner. On 1.7.0? Download this zip by hand and unzip it over your old folder; after that, the launcher updates itself.
New in 1.7.2: a mod browser for Nexus Mods
- Browse Retro Rewind's mods on Nexus Mods from the launcher: Mods tab, then NEXUS MODS. It has search, sorting (most downloaded, recently updated, most endorsed, newest) and pictures. Adult mods stay hidden unless you switch them on.
- Download. It opens the mod's download page on Nexus, where it's one click (a free Nexus account is enough). The launcher notices the file in your Downloads folder and installs it, backing up your saves first. Mods you got this way show INSTALLED or UPDATE AVAILABLE.
- .7z and .rar mods install too, not just .zip and .pak.
- Get their mods. When a host's mods differ from yours and they got them through the launcher, the friend list and the "Join anyway?" question offer to show you exactly those mods, ready to download.
Nexus only allows downloads through its own site unless an app is registered with them, which is why the last click happens on Nexus for now. One-click installs from inside the launcher are planned once Nexus registers it.
The mod itself is the same as in 1.7.1 apart from its version number. Host and guests still need the same version of the mod and the same version of the game.
Checked
- 250 launcher tests, including the browser against a stand-in Nexus server, the Downloads watcher, and unpacking a .7z. Plus 372 checks of the mod's Lua.
- Live against Nexus Mods: listing, search, and Download opening the file page. A file saved under a mod's real Nexus file name was installed by itself and marked INSTALLED.
- Not yet tried: a real download from Nexus with an account, or "Get their mods" between two real Steam accounts.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT). Mods listed in the browser belong to their authors and are downloaded from Nexus Mods.
Rewind Together 1.7.1
Co-op for Retro Rewind. Download RewindTogether-1.7.1.zip below, unzip it anywhere, and open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt inside the zip walks host and guest through it.
Coming from 1.7.0? Download this zip by hand one last time and unzip it over your old folder. From 1.7.1 on, the launcher updates itself.
New in 1.7.1
- One-click updates. When a new version is out, the launcher shows a green banner. Press Update: it downloads the release from here, checks it against the SHA-256 GitHub publishes, replaces itself and the mod, and restarts. Your saves and settings stay as they are. It won't update during a co-op session.
- Mod check before joining. While its store is open, the host's launcher shares its Rewind Together version and its other mods through Steam. Before a guest joins, their launcher says what differs: another version (red), other content mods such as
.pakand Blueprint mods (yellow), or other script mods (just a note). "Join anyway" still works. Nothing is downloaded. - Discord status. With the Discord app open, your profile says Playing Rewind Together: hosting a video store, visiting a friend's store, running the store, or in the main menu. It also shows the player count and a link here. Nobody's name, address or Steam ID is shown. Switch it off under Diagnostics.
The mod itself is the same as in 1.7.0 apart from its version number. Host and guests still need the same version of the mod and the same version of the game.
Checked
- 223 launcher tests, including the updater against a stand-in GitHub, the mod check with simulated Steam data, and the Discord status against a stand-in Discord. Plus 372 checks of the mod's Lua.
- The real Discord app accepted the status as "Rewind Together".
- Not yet tried: the mod check between two real Steam accounts.
Free for non-commercial use under the PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0 license, with an extra permission for Retro Rewind's developer and publisher (see LICENSE.txt). Bundles UE4SS 3.0.1 (MIT).
Rewind Together 1.7.0
Co-op multiplayer for Retro Rewind. Open your video store to friends and run it together: same shelves, same stock, same till, same clock.
For Retro Rewind Steam build 23896268 ("Changelist 2308"), Windows.
Install
- Download RewindTogether-1.7.0.zip below, right-click it and choose Extract All...
- Open RewindTogetherLauncher.exe. It finds Retro Rewind, backs up your saves, and installs the UE4SS loader and the mod (both are in the zip, nothing else is downloaded). If Windows shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway: the exe isn't code-signed.
- Host: press HOST MY STORE and walk into your store. Join: pick a friend whose store is open, or type an address under Other ways to join. You don't need a save of your own to join.
Everyone needs the same mod version and the same game version. Step-by-step help for hosts and guests: HOW TO PLAY - START HERE.txt in the zip. In game, press F6 to see whether you're connected and in sync.
What works
Verified in game with a host and a guest, on both screens:
- One shared store: the host's shelves, stock, decorations, expansions, sign and skins.
- Guests work the store: picking up and putting back tapes (with the item on the guest's HUD), the till (scanning, card and cash, change), build mode, the skin tool, selling, and talking to the staff member.
- The world matches: money, XP, level and the clock on the guest's HUD; day, season, weather and scenery; sky and lighting; the town's NPCs with their looks, animation and speech; the end-of-day summary.
- Only the host saves. A guest's own saves are never touched.
The full list of fixes, with what each bug actually was, is in VERSION.txt.
Known limitations
- Tested with two copies of the game on one PC. Two players on two PCs over the internet, and the Steam route in particular, still need real-world testing. Please report how it goes.
- Guests can't change a shelf's model (the mesh tool); colours work.
- The mouse wheel's tool switching isn't sent to the host; use E, V and B.
- A guest's own game also runs each click locally, so an object can jump for a moment before the host's version arrives.
