What does the enhancement do?

Add newline delimited JSON (NDJSON). One object per row in table.
Apparently the up-to-date name for this is "JSONL" for JSON Lines, see https://jsonlines.org/

By default, with (format='JSON') outputs JSON files line by line, so you should get an NDJSON file.
