🌐 Wi-Fi, Web Networking & KryonMail
KryonOS is getting full online connectivity. In v2.0.0, we are introducing native Networking & Web APIs directly into the runtime:
⚡ Hardware Acceleration & High-Performance Math
🎛️ Hardware I/O Expansion: Native PWM & I2C Ecosystem
🔔 Floating System Notifications & Inter-App Communication
Currently, apps lack an OS-level way to surface events without directly redrawing the screen.
In v2.0.0, we are introducing a centralized Floating Notification System:
🧠 Hardware Evolution: Transitioning to the ESP32-S3 (N16R8)
RAM Constraints on the Base ESP32
In v1.0.0, our reference hardware was the standard
esp32doit-devkit-v1(ESP-WROOM-32 with internal SRAM only).Enabling full Wi-Fi and TCP/IP networking consumes between 50 KB and 100 KB of RAM. Because the base ESP32 provides roughly 192 KB of usable internal RAM, running the network stack, graphics compositor, and Duktape interpreter simultaneously leaves negligible heap for user applications. While the OS will boot on standard non-PSRAM chips with Wi-Fi enabled, app stability depends entirely on the script's memory footprint.
The New Standard
To ensure long-term stability and expandability, the default hardware target for KryonOS is moving to the ESP32-S3 (specifically the N16R8 variant):
🔄 Partition Limits & True Over-The-Air (OTA) Updates
Why v1.0.0 Uses an Update Notifier
In v1.0.0, the system notifies you when updates are available on GitHub, but cannot flash them automatically due to standard 4 MB flash partition constraints:
ota_0app partition: 1,280 KB (1.25 MB)ota_1app partition: 1,280 KB (1.25 MB)spiffsstorage partition: 1,408 KB (1.37 MB)Because KryonOS bundles a graphical desktop shell, full Duktape interpreter, and UI assets, the compiled OS binary exceeds the 1.25 MB limit required for dual OTA slots on 4 MB boards.
Seamless Background OTA in v2.0.0
With our pivot toward larger flash targets like the N16R8 (16 MB), KryonOS v2.0.0 introduces true background Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updating, allowing devices to download, verify, and apply full OS updates over Wi-Fi without manual tethering.
📦 Backward Compatibility
Stay tuned as we finalize the release candidate and roll out the KryonOS v2.0.0 developer builds!
