StudyBar 2.12.1

Choose a tag to compare

@IMisbahk IMisbahk released this 03 Jul 16:45

StudyBar 2.12.1 — Smoother first launch

Less System Settings hunting. Permissions are optional and only asked when you want them.

What's new

Permissions only when you opt in

  • No notification prompt on startup — asked only if you enable notifications in onboarding or turn on reminders
  • Global keyboard shortcuts (⌥⌘) are optional — off by default; shortcuts still work while the menu bar popover is open
  • Onboarding Skip for Now on the permissions step — app is fully usable without granting anything

Settings clarity

  • Toggle for global shortcuts with live status
  • One-tap Open Accessibility Settings only if you enabled global shortcuts but haven't granted access yet

First install — macOS may block the app once

StudyBar is distributed outside the App Store and is not notarized (that requires a paid Apple Developer account). The first time you open it, macOS may say the app can't be checked for malware. This is normal for indie Mac apps.

Easiest fix (one time only):

  1. Open Applications in Finder
  2. Right-click StudyBar.appOpen
  3. Click Open in the dialog

After that, double-click works forever. No need to dig through System Settings unless you prefer Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

Terminal alternative: xattr -cr /Applications/StudyBar.app

Install script (strips quarantine automatically):

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/IMisbahk/studybar/main/scripts/install-release.sh | bash

StudyBar lives in the menu bar (book icon) — there is no Dock icon.

Upgrade from 2.12.0

Download the DMG, replace the app in Applications, or use in-app update when idle.

StudyBar 2.12 — Onboarding & Session Log

Small but important quality-of-life fixes.

What's new

Onboarding that actually shows up

The welcome tour no longer uses a sheet inside the menu bar popover (those break on macOS). It renders inline when you first launch with no subjects.

Settings → Show Welcome Tour lets you replay it anytime.

Session log — pick what you delete

Timeline → Session log now supports:

  • Click to select a session; ⌘-click for multiple
  • Select All / Deselect All for the current search
  • Delete Selected with confirmation
  • "Delete all under 5 min" is still there as a shortcut

Upgrade

Download the DMG from GitHub Releases, drag to Applications, and replace the existing app. Your data is unchanged.

StudyBar 2.1

Choose a tag to compare

@IMisbahk IMisbahk released this 03 Jul 16:15

StudyBar 2.1 — Themes & Appearance

Make StudyBar yours. Pick an accent palette, tune the menu bar, and style the floating timer — all local, no account.

What's new in 2.1

Color themes

Seven built-in palettes that tint progress rings, goal rings, charts, and highlights:

  • Classic — system blue
  • Forest — calm greens
  • Sunset — warm coral
  • Lavender — soft purple
  • Ocean — deep teal
  • Rose — pink accent
  • Monochrome — minimal slate

Open Settings → Themes & Appearance (menu bar popover or dashboard) to preview and apply.

Menu bar styles

  • Standard — icon + countdown (default)
  • Compact — tighter layout, smaller timer text
  • Minimal — timer text only while a session is active

Typography & floating timer

  • Rounded timer digits — optional rounded font for countdown text
  • Themed floating timer border — accent-colored border on the floating panel (toggle off for a subtler look)

Upgrade from 2.0

Download the DMG, drag StudyBar to Applications, and replace the existing app. Your subjects, history, goals, and achievements are unchanged.

Automatic updates will offer 2.1 when you're idle (if enabled in Settings → Updates).
