We need to turn the doctest off here, as this is causing the Travis build to fail.

from Travis failure I think this one now needs a skip_doctest.

I spent a while going through the warnings produced by a build of the Sphinx docs. Many of them correspond to bits where formatting and linking goes awry in the built docs. This fixes some of them, though there are still plenty more.
