I think it'd be useful to add a link to this bibtex to cff crosswalk, and clarifying the proper way to generate a conference paper citation (see also this note) would be good since most computer science projects are published in proceedings, not journals.
I'm debating breaking this into two templates (where the templates are directly linkable), similar to how we have two expandable templates for HF. That way they can copy the correct version and may think more about whether or not extra keys are needed. I have seen instances where the preferred-citation key just gets a copy of the repo citation, so it's not entirely clear that the text is being read in all cases.
