Setting up NanoGPT connection

I have tried using the OpenAI API setup as that seems to be the closest to what I am looking for in terms of API, endpoint, and model. I am seemingly unable to make the connection work with any queries against the endpoint and model key resulting in an infinite loop of 'brainstorming'. I would like to know.

1. what connection type to use?
2. do I have to go into the config files and setup a custom provider
3. If I get it setup, how do I add/designate the model keys
