Everyone was instructed to notify me with any libraries that are not on the school computers.

Provide me with the apt-get install line to install your required library.

sudo apt-get install libssl-dev
The package came with my ubuntu installation, and I didn't realize it wasn't also available by default on the school systems. Sorry for the trouble.
