Crashes on startup since last Windows update

Bug Description

I've attached the dump file. Getting:

0xC0000005
The thread tried to read from or write to a virtual address for which it does not have the appropriate access.

Already ran DISM and SFC, both come back clean. Reinstalled .NET, uninstalled & reinstalled Playnite, and started Playnite in safe mode. None seem to resolve the issue.

To Reproduce

¯_(ツ)_/¯ Apply the latest Windows 11 update, restart your PC and attempt to start Playnite, I guess.

Is it possible it's crashing before it even has a chance to report a crash?

Are you not getting crash dialog with an option to send crash report? If that's the case and Playnite just closes itself, then it's 99% not an issue in Playnite but some outside cause. Nothing we can do about that. You'll have to somehow figure out what on the system broke. If you are saying that it started happening after Windows update, then you can try uninstalling that update.

Yeah, no crash report dialogue. I assumed it was something with my system since the timing was so specific and there were zero other changes.

With that 0xC0000005 access violation error code, does Playnite require access to any core Windows files to function that this update may've blocked in the latest update?

0xC0000005 is just generic "access violation" error code, that could mean anything

Although I can't reproduce it in a VM with that update installed.

I'm jinxing myself by saying so, but I believe I've solved the issue, but it took a third-party uninstaller to fully remove Playnite from my system. It managed to find leftover files not removed by the Playnite uninstaller.

I've since reinstalled Playnite on the OS drive and so far no crashes.

This may just be because I typically don't install Playnite on the C drive, so working files are spread across multiple drives, and some file off the default drive became corrupted? Who knows. Knock on wood this is resolved, though.

Thanks for the link. If Playnite continues to crash I'll keep an eye out for a Windows update.

I don't see how this could have been caused by corrupted Playnite install since you said you tried reinstalling Playnite and it didn't fix it.

If you don't install in portable mode, then only files that are stored on c drive (specifically in %appdata% folder) are user files. Files that can't cause this type of crash if they are corrupted.

Either way, I'm closing this since it's working for you now and also these crashes are in 99% of cases not caused by an issue in Playnite that we can actually fix.

Spoke too soon, it continues to crash on startup. It's sporadic is the annoying thing. I have zero extensions or plugins or anything at this point.

Rolling back this week's Windows security update did not resolve it. Loading in safe mode doesn't solve it. Using an older version of Playnite doesn't solve it.

I'm not looking to open this thread back up, but in case anyone else has this issue, it's not just you.
