Pickled Railways ‐ PRTS Green Line

PickledTripod edited this page Feb 25, 2026 · 9 revisions

The Green Line is the Kiwi Cave's first rapid transit system. It is a loop service operated by PickledTripod over railway main line sections built by users drewcassidy, johnsonwax, CobaltWolf, Sofie, and John Locke; with a purpose-built section closing the gap on the north side. GrandProtectorDark provides clean, renewable kelp fuel.

Trains run 24 hours per day at a frequency of 20 trains per hour in both clockwise (Inner Loop service) and counter-clockwise (Outer Loop service) directions, stopping at all 10 stations on the line. Small delays can be expected due to interaction with other trains sharing the network, but the interval between trains is rarely more than 4 minutes. They take a little over 15 minutes to run around the entire loop.

Work in progress on stations

At a lot of stations on the line are not yet completed beyond a simple platform. Putting this system in service took a lot of time and effort, so apologies for taking a break from it now that the infrastructure at least functions in a bare minimum state. Eventually all stations will feature proper access bridges and/or tunnels to their surroundings, proper lighting, and other amenities. The northern section of tracks will also be properly decorated, following the design established by drewcassidy and JW.

Loop line operations

The line has a "terminus" at Kouyousan-South station, where trains are put into and taken out of service from the neighbouring depot. Each trains runs around the loop four times before going out of service. This means that when you ride past the castle, there's a 25% chance that your train is ending its run there. They will stop on the south side of the island platform, immediately adjacent to the parking tracks. There will be a chime to notify anyone on board when you arrive, and once again after 25 seconds to warn you to get out. Please disembark and wait for the next train coming in your direction, which should take less than 4 minutes. If you stay on board, the train will park at the depot, and it could take any amount of time to get going again, in either direction.

Why aren't there departure boards at every station?

Display boards fail to correctly display the next arrival time for Green Line trains. I'm not sure why that's the case, but they're unable to provide an estimate until a train leaves the previous station, and by then it's 1-2 minutes away at most. Thankfully Green Line trains come every 2-4 minutes in each direction. So boards are only useful at stations where you can connect with other services.

How does the depot work?

Under the depot next to Kouyousan-South is a maze of redstone circuits and machinery that performs a number of tasks to keep them running reliably around the Green Line loop.

  • Redstone circuitry detects where trains are parked and which outgoing lines are obstructed by reading from stations and signals.
  • The last step in a train's schedule is to park at an eastern parking spot. If the western spot behind it is free, a schedule will be given to the train to park it there instead.
  • A conveyor belt system delivers schedules to parked trains. A timer based on a small train with redstone contacts triggers it at precise intervals, sending a new auto-schedule to the first available train to send it around the Inner or Outer loop.
  • By dispatching trains according to a timer independent of any externalities, accumulated delays get reset, which ensures reliable and regular service.
  • The depot also includes the fuelling system, which is automatically refilled by a dedicated train parked at the industrial space under Kouyousan Castle; as well as controls to prevent the terminus track from being used as a shortcut by other trains.
  • Since this is all controlled by redstone and Create machinery, 9 chunks are permanently loaded, with an additional 3 conditionally loaded when fuelling trains.

What do I do if I break a train?

If you somehow cause a train to lose its auto-schedule, first verify that both friendly drivers are still alive. If they are, you can simply send the train back to the depot. Bring them to a station with a name matching PRTS-KS depot *E, either by driving manually, or using a non-looping auto-schedule. If one of the drivers is missing, please instead send the train to PRTS-KS workshop West and notify me.

Is this a reference to the Yamanote Line in Tokyo?

Yes it is. The lime green color, the fact that it's a loop service, the Inner/Outer naming convention. Inspiration is also taken from Hankyu Railways in the Osaka area (the retro look of the trains).
