Summary
NOTE: not that we need another spreadsheet, but if we get a lot of examples then this is already looking like spreadsheet territory.
Fun to start from scratch, but never hurts to get the ideas flowing by seeing what's already out there. Let's find a few examples (started a list below) and discuss some pros/cons of each. Specifically, things like:
- Overall layout:
- Mobile-friendliness
- Complexity/busy-ness level
- Main components positioning (e.g. page header, sidebar/s, panels on top of map vs. adjacent to it)
- Colors/theme: of the UI, not the symbology (feel free to comment, but that will ultimately be its own monstrous issue).
- Search, query, filter: modal dialog vs. side panel/s. How busy? Intuitive? If so, in what way?
- Symbology UI: can user change symbology and/or labels? Is the process intuitive?
- Popups/info view: small, simple, in-map vs. big modal/standalone view with dedicated layout
Examples
Not to self-promote, but these include some examples Jason worked on simply because they are diverse in UI and topic. Criticism still encouraged! 👍 👎
- https://native-land.ca/
- https://www.1947partitionarchive.org/ (definitely check out a popup or two).
- https://friendsofsleepingbear.org/sbht-i-map/ including popup example. Be sure to click the More Info btn and scroll down for a decent example of presenting a lot of info efficiently and cleanly.
- https://www.covidselfreport.org/ (good example of nav btns and "everything on top of map" approach in general)
- https://www.google.com/maps is a good example of "stuff on top of map", and especially illustrates the drawback of "sidebar that covers map but unfortunately obscures search results".
- https://www.globalforestwatch.org/map is an incredible all-around example of "great UI despite tons of stuff going on". Granted it's 10x as much "stuff" as we'll have, but it goes to show how well that can be pulled off.
- https://gitlab.com/abm-website/gatsby/-/blob/dev/possible-examples.md aaaaaand gonna cut myself off right there since there are dozens of excellent examples to play with (I spent awhile curating that a few months ago, was really impressed by what's out there!).
