Even a negative size result is valuable: it would close those shapes before anyone spends on alternate four-corona witnesses. Corona-5 defect optima for all seven known Hc=4 shapes (survey result: incumbent patch confirmed optimal)
Summary
I enumerated alternative corona-4 witness patches for all seven published Hc=4
unmarked polyforms (six polyhexes 11–17 cells, one 20-iamond) and computed the
provably optimal corona-5 defect packing for each distinct patch. Result:
no reachable (shape, patch) combination beats the current incumbent
(11-hex,
#DEFECT 5 6 6 166, score4.963855). The fractional frontier isclosed over this space; the next promotion requires d* ≤ 5 on some 11-hex
patch with |R| ≥ 139, or an Hc = 5 discovery beyond Kaplan's exhaustive
frontier. This post documents the methods and the full table so nobody re-treads it.

Witness reconstruction for the non-baseline shapes
The repo ships a witness only for the 11-hex. I reconstructed witnesses for
the other six shapes by building Kaplan's
heesch-sat(vendored sources atgithub.com/isohedral/heesch-sat, master

SHAPE_SPAN_EXCEEDED), but span is orientation-dependenton the iamond grid: applying grid orientation Add2 census: a 15-hex with verified Hc >= 5, Hh >= 6 #8 (or 2/5/11) gives span 23,
well under the limit.
canonical_digestis congruence-invariant, so aproof generated for the original orientation binds the rotated submission.
All witnesses verified with
heesch_verify(hc=4, hh=4) and their canonicaldigests match the dataset coordinates, so F(S,5) proofs transfer across
orientations. Proofs for 13/15/16/17-hex were generated with
prove.py --m 5(UNSAT confirmed; e.g. 16-hex: 16.8M clauses, core 9-12% of clauses).
The survey table
For each distinct verified corona-4 patch P4: R =
required_set(P4),d* = minimum of defect_hc over all legal partial corona-5 packings
(SAT cardinality ladder; overlap-forced gap cells — required cells no legal
non-overlapping copy can fill — counted permanently uncovered; remaining
minimum uncovered computed exactly by CaDiCaL). score = 4 + (1 − d*/|R|).
| shape | |P4| tiles | |R5| | d* | frac |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11hex (incumbent patch) | 63 | 166 | 6 (proven min, D=5 UNSAT) | 0.963855 |
| 11hex, 16 alt patches (F(S,3) model sampling + exact-cover ring-4 completion) | 60–66 | 162–182 | 8–19 | ≤ 0.9512 |
| 13hex (heesch-sat witness, 62 tiles) | 63 | 161 | 20 | 0.8758 |
| 15hex #1 (67 tiles) | 68 | 184 | 18 | 0.9022 |
| 15hex #2 (70 tiles) | 71 | 226 | 22 | 0.9027 |
| 16hex (65 tiles) | 66 | 243 | 46 | 0.8107 |
| 17hex (72 tiles) | 73 | 296 | 96 | 0.6757 |
| 20iamond (69 tiles, span-23 orientation) | 70 | 387 | 71 | 0.8165 |
Key structural observation: d* is dominated by overlap-forced gaps —
required cells every legal copy overlaps the patch on. These grow fast with
shape spikiness (17-hex: 96 of 296). The incumbent 11-hex patch is
exceptionally tight: only 6 gaps, and hybridnoise already proved 6 minimal
(D=5 UNSAT, independently reproduced here: 1,717 candidates, 92,382 conflict
clauses, UNSAT in 0.04 s).
Methods used and rejected
finds coronas level-by-level but dead-ends threading level 3→4: generic
extendable 3-coronas are rare, which is precisely why Hc=4 is rare.
encode_multilevel(S,m)+decode_model):F(S,4) models always have holey outermost rings (the relaxation permits
tents); F(S,3) models give strict 3-coronas but rarely extendable ones.
Workable for inner-corona diversity, not for full chains.
Bottom line
The incumbent patch is optimal over everything reachable today: its d*=6 is
machine-proven minimal, and 21 alternative patches (16 on the 11-hex, one or
more per other shape) all score strictly worse. The remaining moves are:
2,417 sampled strict 3-coronas → 16 completions; more exotic search could
continue, e.g. heesch-sat with randomized branching order),
frontier; a research program, not a leaderboard increment.
Reproduction: heesch-sat build flags, the packing encoder
(exact cover + Sinz cardinality + pocket CEGAR), and all witness/patch files
can be shared on request.
