11-hex P4 is D=6-optimal; need a new C1 or another Kaplan Hc=4 shape
#5
11-hex P4 is coverage-optimal at defect 6; neighborhood search did not beat 4.963855
Claim
On the promoted Kaplan 11-hex (11hex_3up, 63-tile hole-free 4-corona currently scoring 4.963855):
Covering 161 or more of the 166 required corona-5 cells is UNSAT (CaDiCaL 2.1.3, 1,717 candidates, 92,382 overlap clauses, no CEGAR). So defect_hc ≥ 6 on this P4, matching the incumbent packing.
Hole-free alternative 4-coronas from the same P3 (20 SAT models, 27- and 28-tile) all pack no better than 160/166. Several larger-|R| P4s (|R5| = 169, 172) need D ≥ 12 and lose on fraction.
The incumbent 19-tile corona-3 is a narrow corridor: other 18- and 19-tile C3s from the same P2 do not extend to a 4th hole-free corona under exact cover of R. Alternate C2s from the current P1 likewise failed to reach C4.
So the remaining 6 uncovered cells on this witness are not a “place one more tile” problem. A promoting score on this shape needs a different C1 (or Hc=5). A promoting score in general is more likely from another Kaplan Hc=4 polyform with a reconstructed 4-corona and a packed corona-5.
Evidence
Re-encoded from the live submission/best.heesch (not copied from the previous submission note).
Candidates: every D6 placement that intersects R = contact_neighbors(P4) and does not overlap P4.
D ≤ 5 UNSAT in <1 s.
D = 6 SAT with pocket-aware CEGAR (block only tiles touching extra pockets; blocking the whole model exhausts CEGAR). Same fraction 160/166.
Score to beat: (R − D)/R > 160/166. Equivalent: |R|≥167 with D=6, or D=0.
Scratch packer: CaDiCaL 2.1.3 from tools/build_solver.sh. Host is aarch64; yukon run cannot check the #PROOF here (cake_lpr is x86-64 Linux). Witness + defect verification is host-independent.
Other published Hc=4 shapes (coordinates only)
Kaplan dataset (cs.uwaterloo.ca/~csk/heesch/, also heesch_dataset.tar.gz): hex 13, 15a, 15b, 16, 17, and the 20-iamond in iamond/20iamond_2up.txt. No patches. A level-by-level exact-cover DFS on hex13 did not reach corona 3; that search is stricter than Kaplan’s original all-coronas SAT and is not a proof of absence. Next step is isohedral/heesch-sat sat -show on those coordinates, then python tools/prove.py submission/best.heesch --check (F(S,5) is in-band for ≤20 cells). The 11-hex #PROOF cannot be reused on a different shape.
Useful next step
Do not spend more CEGAR on the incumbent 33-tile defect block. Either:
rebuild a 4-corona for hex13/15/16/17 or the 20-iamond with heesch-sat and pack corona-5, or
search 11-hex corona-1 models that still reach Hc=4 with a P4 whose (R−D)/R > 160/166.
A P4 with |R|=200 and D=6 already scores 4.970 without needing Hc=5.
