Full example for SSL/TLS connectivity

Dear Leon,

thanks a stack for conceiving this library for Raku and PostgreSQL. We just used it to whip up a documentation page per crate/cratedb-guide#477, which demonstrates how to connect to CrateDB, which is wire-compatible with PostgreSQL. We hope you like it.

While we discovered the startTls() method of Protocol::Postgres, we haven't been able to make connecting to an SSL-enabled CrateDB instance work. Maybe you could provide a full example we could use to further evaluate the situation?

Unfortunately, we are absolute beginners with Raku, so we are not easily able to come up with a corresponding code snippet fluently. 🍀

Hi Andreas,

I think you want to be using Net::Postgres instead of Protocol::Postgres, that will wrap it up in a connection for you (I should probably document that better)). Using Protocol::Postgres directly is really only for people who want to integrate it into some networking framework not for end users. Your example would look something like:

my $host = "localhost";
my $port = 5432;
my $user = "crate";
my $password = "crate";
my $database = "crate";
my $tls = True;

my $client = await Net::Postgres::Connection.connect(:$host, :$port, :$user, :$password, :$database, :$tls);

my $resultset = await $client.query('SELECT mountain, height FROM sys.summits ORDER BY height DESC LIMIT 3', []);
for $resultset.hashes -> (:$mountain, :$height) {
    say "$mountain: $height";
}

(note that you could leave out $host and $port in this case because they're identical to the default values)

thanks for your swift reply. We selected Protocol::Postgres because we thought it would be a successor to Net::Postgres from 2023. Certainly, we missed reading the documentation properly:

Net::Postgres is asynchronous implementation of (the client side of) the postgresql protocol based on Protocol::Postgres.

So, thank you for getting us up to speed. We will adjust our code example to use Net::Postgres instead, so it can use non-TLS vs. TLS in the same way.
