I've been experimenting with typos, a command-line tool for picking up spelling errors in code, and these are some changes from a first pass.

I'm not sure it handles Fortran natively (without configuration), so I ended up working quite inefficiently through the output by hand and I'm not convinced this is worthwhile. Still, it polishes the comments in a handful of places.

I haven't tested anything but all the changes should be to comments, rather than code.

suggested 2 fixes to typo auto-corrections. Applied typos to the docs too. Good to merge!
