mh_PLAYer v2.12.1 — Release Notes

High-Performance CGI/VFX Image Sequence & Video Player for Windows
Martin P. Heigan · anti-matter-3d.com/mhplayer

What's New in v2.12.1

v2.12.1 is a packaging and licensing update on top of the v2.12.0 feature
release (below).

Optional Windows installer — new

A signed, per-user Windows installer (mh_PLAYer_Win_x64_v2_12_1_Setup.exe)
now ships alongside the portable ZIP. No admin rights or UAC prompt — it
installs to your local app data, and its Select Additional Tasks page lets
you tick a Start Menu shortcut, a Desktop shortcut, and PATH integration (all
ticked by default). The portable ZIP remains available and unchanged.

Help → Install License… — new

Install a license without leaving the app: Help → Install License…, browse
to your signed license.dat, and mh_PLAYer validates and installs it for you,
then prompts you to relaunch — no manual file copying.

In-app documentation links

The Help menu now opens the Quick Start guide and CLI Cheat Sheet PDFs
directly, plus the Nuke Integration folder, alongside the User Manual and
License Agreement.

What's New in v2.12.0

Version 2.12 is a major feature release. It introduces a complete multi-clip
editing timeline, frame-accurate synchronised review across machines, and
Python plugin scripting — all built on the new Studio Pro license tier —
plus playlist interchange, drop-frame timecode, and a refreshed user manual.

EDL / Multi-Clip Timeline — new (Studio Pro)

Assemble multiple sequences and clips into a single ordered cut and review it
back-to-back, exactly as it will be conformed downstream.

  • Per-clip In/Out trims, drag-to-reorder, and edge trim handles
  • Non-modal EDL editor with a live playhead that tracks playback
  • Loop playback, seamless next-clip pre-loading, and grade persistence across cuts
  • CMX 3600 EDL import/export — round-trip with Premiere, Avid, Resolve, Final Cut
  • Build a timeline directly from the Playlist (Send Playlist to Timeline)
  • Headless render to movie or image sequence:
mh_player --convert cut.mhedl review.mp4
mh_player --convert cut.mhedl review.mov --display aces --burnin --codec prores

Synced Remote Review — new (Studio Pro)

Keep multiple mh_PLAYer instances on a LAN locked to the same frame, at full
quality.

  • Frame-accurate playback synchronisation across machines
  • Automatic session discovery — followers see a hosted session and join in one click
  • Host-authoritative timing, bi-directional transport control, auth token, reconnect-on-drop

Distinct from the existing free browser Remote Review (open a frame in any
browser on the LAN), which remains available and unchanged.

Plugin Scripting — new (Studio Pro)

Extend the player with small Python plugins.

  • Drop a .py file in the plugins/ folder; plugins load on startup
  • Stable, versioned mh_player_api — state queries, playback control, status/log, and event hooks (on_frame_change, on_open_file, on_export_complete)
  • Bundled example_plugin.py; full API reference in Appendix B of the manual

Playlist — reorder, trim & interchange

  • Drag-to-reorder and per-shot In/Out trim, with trim badges in the list
  • M3U / M3U8 import/export — VLC-compatible, with per-clip trim preserved
  • One-click Send Playlist to Timeline (EDL)

Timecode, Colour & Audio

  • Exact drop-frame timecode at 29.97 and 59.94 fps (SMPTE-correct), in the HUD, burn-in, and CMX 3600 export
  • CDL grade (slope / offset / power) applied through a fast precomputed LUT
  • Faster embedded-audio loading via a PyAV decode path
  • Smoother seamless looping and a play-start warm gate that removes cold-start stutter

Interface

  • Second quick-access icon row — Playlist, EDL, Onion-skin, Export, and Sync shortcuts
  • Studio Pro tier badge and unified feature-locked messaging

Documentation

  • New v2.12 User Manual (mh_PLAYer_v2_12_User_Manual.pdf, in the distribution root) — adds the EDL / Multi-Clip Timeline, Plugins, Studio Pro tier, an expanded CLI appendix, and a full Plugin API appendix
  • Help → User Manual… opens it directly

Free vs Licensed Features

The core viewer, colour management, aspect ratio correction, stereo anaglyph,
browser remote review, the QC toolkit, and the full pipeline CLI remain free.
Paid licenses add the production workflow features; Studio Pro adds the
advanced collaboration and automation features.

Capability Free Individual Studio Studio Pro
Core viewer · colour · aspect ratio · stereo · browser remote review · QC · CLI
Annotations · A/B Compare · Playlist · Audio · Export · Slate & Burn-in
EDL / Multi-Clip Timeline · Synced Remote Review · Plugin Scripting
Licensed use across machines Single (MAC) Organisation-wide Organisation-wide

Individual and Studio include the same feature set and differ only in
machine binding (single machine vs organisation-wide floating). Studio Pro
is the organisation-wide tier that also unlocks the EDL / Multi-Clip Timeline,
Synced Remote Review, and Plugin Scripting. All paid licenses are perpetual.

A 10-day full-feature trial (every feature, including Studio Pro) is available on request — no payment required.
