What's New in v1.3.0
- About dialog — Help > About shows version, credit, licence, and a direct
link to the tools page - Version badge — visible in the action bar at all times, alongside the mode
indicator - Version alignment — release numbering continues from the original tool
history (the 2005 tkinter renamer shipped as v1.2)
Everything Since the Rewrite
This is the first public release of the PySide6 rewrite. Compared to the
original tkinter tool:
- Live side-by-side preview — Current Name and New Name in adjacent columns,
updating as you type. No Preview button, no popup window. - Colour-coded rows — green for files that will change, red for conflicts,
dim for unchanged - Wildcard file filter —
\*,?, and\#(one digit). Typename.####.exr
directly. - Multiple filter patterns — space or comma separated (
\*.exr *.dpx), with
bare-extension shorthand - Natural sort order — frame 9 always precedes frame 10 regardless of source
padding - Conflict detection — Commit stays disabled until every target name is
unique; no silent overwrites - Copy to output directory — non-destructive mode; originals are never
touched. Cross-drive and network-share support via shutil with Robocopy
fallback. - Mode indicator — IN-PLACE RENAME (blue) / COPY TO OUTPUT (amber) shown at
all times - Undo last batch — reverses renames or removes copies, depending on the mode
used - Prefix and suffix operations — new in the rewrite
- Renumber step control — for alternating-camera and cadence sequences
System Requirements
Windows 10 / 11 (64-bit). No Python installation required — the runtime is
bundled.
Security
Signed with a Certum code signing certificate, RFC 3161 timestamped, submitted
to Microsoft WDSI, and scanned on VirusTotal before release.
Get-AuthenticodeSignature mh_rename_Win_x64_v1_3_0.exeA small number of heuristic scanners flag Python-packaged executables
generically based on the packaging method rather than program behaviour.
mh_rename makes no network connections, writes no registry keys, and only
touches files in directories you explicitly select.

mh_rename v1.2.0
mh_rename — File Sequence Renamer (mh_tools)
A small, practical GUI tool for quickly renaming image sequences (or any batch of files) using simple rules: replace text, renumber, and/or change extension.
Built for day-to-day production use where you just want the job done cleanly and predictably.
Features
- Select an Input Directory containing files to rename
- Optional Output Directory (files are moved there while renaming)
- Replace Text (simple find/replace on the filename)
- Renumber with a start number and padding
- Adds numbers as a dot suffix:
name.0001 - Automatically removes an existing trailing
._####/_.####style number first
- Adds numbers as a dot suffix:
- Change Extension (e.g.
.png→.jpg) - Preview Rename before committing changes
Download & Run (Windows)
- Download the latest release ZIP from the Releases page.
- Extract the ZIP to a convenient location (e.g.
D:\Tools\mh_rename\). - Run
mh_rename.exe.
Tip: Keep a backup of your files. Preview first, rename second. You can also specify a different output directory; the Renamer will then copy and rename for you.
How to Use
- Click Select Input Directory
- (Optional) Click Select Output Directory
- Enable and fill any of these options:
- Text to replace / Replace with
- Start number (enable Renumber)
- Padding (e.g. 4 →
0001) - New extension (without the dot is fine)
- Click Preview Rename to check the result
- Click Rename Files to apply
Examples
Replace text
shotA_render_v003.0001.exr→ replaceshotAwithshotB
Renumber (start 10, padding 4)
frame_anything.exr→frame_anything.0010.exr,frame_anything.0011.exr, ...
Change extension
plate.0100.png→plate.0100.jpg
Notes / Behaviour
- If Output Directory is set, files are moved into that folder while being renamed.
- If Output is not set, files are renamed in place.
- The tool processes the files in sorted order (alphabetical).
Troubleshooting
- Nothing happens / missing files: make sure you extracted the ZIP completely before running.
- Rename errors: can occur if a destination filename already exists or the folder is not writable. Preview and ensure unique output names.

mh_rename – File Sequence Renamer for VFX / CGI
mh_rename is a small Windows GUI tool for batch-renaming image and file sequences. It can replace parts of filenames, renumber frames with custom padding, change extensions, and preview all changes before anything is written to disk. Ideal for shot and render management in VFX, CGI, and motion design pipelines.
