Developed by academics at the National University of Defense Technology since 2001. The first versions were based on FreeBSD and with version 3.0 became Linux-based. A separate project using Ubuntu as the Linux operating system was announced in 2013. The first version of Ubuntu Kylin was released in April 2013. Popularity: 48 (247 hits per day) in DistroWatch.
Development first starting in 1998 at the Korea Computer Center (KCC). An official version of Red Star OS 4.0 has been developed as of January 2019
