PlugSound is a free macOS menu bar utility.

It plays a sound whenever a USB or Type-C device is connected or disconnected, giving your Mac a clear and satisfying device feedback cue.

Features

How To Use

After launching PlugSound, it stays in the macOS menu bar.

Click the PlugSound menu bar icon to:

• Enable or pause device monitoring
• View recent device events
• Open the full settings window
• Quit the app

In the settings window, you can configure:

• The device connect sound
• The device disconnect sound
• The repeat count for each sound
• Whether a sound should play when a device is disconnected

Custom Sounds

PlugSound lets you choose your own audio file as a notification sound.

Supported formats:

• AIFF
• WAV
• MP3
• M4A

After you choose a custom file, PlugSound saves permission to access it. As long as the file is not moved or deleted, the app can keep using it after relaunch.

System Requirements

• macOS 13.0 Ventura or later
• Apple Silicon and Intel Macs are supported

Permissions

PlugSound needs access to USB device status so it can detect connection and disconnection events.

If you choose a custom sound, PlugSound also needs permission to read the audio file you selected. It only accesses files you explicitly choose.

PlugSound does not collect personal data and does not need an internet connection to run.

Built-In Sounds And Credits

PlugSound includes a set of built-in sounds so you can start using it right away.

Ding.wav and Drop.wav are the default project sounds. Some other bundled sounds are shared by third-party creators. See ATTRIBUTIONS.md for the full credits.
